Hey guys. I am taking down the rear suspension on my 84 phazer to replace bearings, wheels etc. And I can't get the rear axle out to replace the center idler. It appears to be stuck in the outside collars. Is the axle just seized in the collars or is there something I am missing that needs to be removed first? Any tips/tricks to get this out? This is the only thing keeping me from reassembling my sled. Thanks in advance.

The axle is seized. Heat is a mechanics best friend, but the axle may have swollen too much from oxidization.
The 84 had a number of clutching and rear suspension updates, check with your local dealer. Don't do the clutching updates if you want performance out of the hole. Replacing that aluminum shaft on the mid suspension boggies is a must.

Thanks for the heads up on the axle. I have tried heat and hasn't done much. I just went and ordered 2 collars and I am going to cut mine off. Didn't know about suspension upgrades. What changed with that aluminum shaft on the mid axle? I believe mine is steel and not aluminum.

I might take you up on that motofishsled. We'll see what happens when I get this bad ram apart.
Tonight I cut both collars off. They were stuck HARD. Had to put quarter slices in them and knock off each piece.
I have to ask, why do I always end up with the sled the previous owner neglected? SHEESH

Yamaha supports the dealer by making some maintenance an expected teardown/rebuild. The dealers tought us you MUST dissasemble and grease the suspension every 2 years min.
I'll never forget the Skidoo yearly update when the rep answered a common problem question with the answer "We could build product that lasted, but you would be out of a job".
It's an evil web that the mechanic is 90% blamed for 10% of the owners problems
