I have a 2001 Mountain Max and I an issue with my skis not getting up. I live on the prairies and was going through about 18 inches of powder. I basically ride trails and stubble fields, no mountains for this mountain max. My problem is that unless I have the throttle pinned while I'm in powder, the skis are tossing snow right into my face. I'm a big guy at 260 lbs. I am a new rider so I'm not sure what I need to do to my sled. I was sledding with 6 other guys and none of their sleds were doing the same. Any suggestions? Where do I begin? My buddy was riding it and pointed out that when you hammer the throttle, the skis wont even lift off the ground barely.

Another issue I have noticed is that I have zero top end speed. I get murdered by a skidoo 500. I can get up to 70 miles an hour when throttle is pinned but I'm hitting 8000 RPM's which is nearly in the danger zone. I had my buddy reweight the clutch as it was doing 9000 RPM's before to go that fast and I actually cooked the engine last year. Do I need to regear it? If I re-gear doesn't that mean I'd have to reweight the clutches again?

Finally, oil use. I'm using a crazy amount of oil. One litre of oil per tank or more, I haven't figured out the exact usage but do know it is using double the amount of oil that any of my other buddies use.

Your thoughts on any of these issues is greatly appreciated.

you will get alot better ski lift if you replace the transfer rods with straps (MPI transfer enhancment kit)... my mountain max throws snow in my face too i guess its a poor ski design im gonna try the sly dog skis next there wicked for powder...the mountain maxs are not fast there designed to climb mountains not for top speed so dont expect more than 120-140 km/h... the rpm the 700 redheads run the best is 8400-8600 rpm ive been told by alot of people on this site and 1 litre of oil per tank sound normal (50:1 ratio) so if your buddies is burning alot less then that there lean on oil and probably will be replacing pistons/ rings alot sooner then you will. hope this helps...

Yea target rpm for the redheads is 8500. That's where they make the most power. It doesn't hurt them to run 9000rpm either, just not as much power there due to the hp curve. Most other manufacture sleds don't rev as high.

Just a note about the ski issue, mine did the same thing and I removed the bolts holding the ski loop and redrilled the bottom hole and remounted the loop just one hole down. This flattoned the ski out somewhat and did help some with the snow in the face

Worked for me too until I got new skis

I had three MM, 1 600 & 2 700's ... WAS really mad at that problem, so I put Nitro, Phazer, or Apex ski's on and problem solved. Much nicer skis,, and the carbides work great too.. there are double carbides or single ones. I run the single ones,, just cause the doubles are a little pricey ..I still have the 700's LOVE THOSE MM's !!!!!!!!! I should never have sold the six ,, the buddy kind of wreck it after he bought it.... OH ya the oil problem just adjust the oil injector line thingamagig,, do not know what it is called but it is hard to get at.. below the carbs and against the engine.. down there some where.. just follow the line down you will find it.. I should do mine again it uses to much oil all so, have to take the air box out then the carbs half out.. unless you got real small hands.. YES YOOPERMIKE you said it stock junk skis.. OTHER than that PIPES man PIPES helps HP,, but my 700's will only do about 125 KM... fast enough for me but I mostly ride mountains..

I've seen many people here using the original skis. They really aren't good for anything else than moving the sled around in the garage. It seems the aftermarket skis aren't as common there as they are here.

Any powder designed skis will do. I've tried SLP Powder Pro's they are superb in powder but do make steering a bit heavier and pointy in trails. Right now I have the '09 Doo X-RS Summit skis (Pilot 6.9) which also work good in loose snow and won't throw snow at your face, although some Doo owners have changed them, mainly to SLP PP's. Slydog Powderhounds are also good, as well as Polaris Gripper skis.

When changing skis, AC and Polaris skis as well as aftermarket skis with Yamaha/AC/Polaris saddles fit easily to Yamaha's, BRP skis or aftermarket skis with BRP saddles require some modifications.

try calculating your oil usage so we know exactly where your at,in the mean time measure(mm) your pump at gap "a" and post back.

to set pump do these checks in this order;

1st- set idle to 16- 1,7000 rpm's(@ operating temp)

2nd- set throttle end play to 2mm(adjustment for that is here )

3rd- set oil pump cable free play here and here to 21(richer)to 23(leaner)mm

Hi tent trash!
Greetings from northern Sweden. At the moment we have some 3 feet bottomless powder. :D But om the other hand, we have some -4 degrees F, so there isn´t much sledriding right now.

I have a 2001 Mountain Max and I an issue with my skis not getting up.

I installed quickrods (shortened from a Viper), now i can choose if I want the skis in the air or at the trail.

the skis are tossing snow right into my face.

The original skis really s*ck. I recently bought SLP PP, the best I ever bought for my sled! I run them on the Yamaha MM mounts, just drilled new holes in them. (Skidoo mounts is about 1" to "low".)

I'm hitting 8000 RPM's

I believe shift rpm should be 8300 rpm?

I'm using a crazy amount of oil. One litre of oil per tank or more, I haven't figured out the exact usage but do know it is using double the amount of oil that any of my other buddies use.

Seems to be standard on the M700.

my mtn max runs 87 mph at 10k ft. Ran it next to a 2009 summit xp 800 with a 146

Mine has a 156 camo

20-40 gears

Check gearing, the 21-40 doesnt allow the belt to get to the top of the primary, also a ultimax belt is about 1/2 inch longer, resulting in more top speed as well

My clutches are set for 8-10k ft so I cant help you with specs there

BTW, mine also had benders triples on it
