Fellow member on here enduroracer was gracious enough to send me a nice carb for my '83 SS 440 I am trying to get running. Problem is the carb throat on the engine side is substantially smaller than the one that came off. What size is stock for this sled? Could I get a carb adaptor to make it fit? Can anyone suggest some numbers I can check or measurements to make to figure out what exactly I have for carbs?

Thanks!

The ID on the engine side of the new carb is about 1.5" and the junk carb I took off has an ID on about 1.75". Which one is correct for the sled? I can't find any numbers on the carb from enduroracer. There are numbers from the carb I took off.....8L801 UI24.

Guy over at vintagesleds.com told me the '80-'81 ss 440s had a smaller carb then the '82-'85 440s. I must have got the smaller carb from an earlier sled.

Can someone tell me how much performance loss there will be. I have found info online stating the ss 440 is about a 50 hp sled. A review by snow goer of the '80 model stated this. Are the newer ones rated much higher? Anyone have first hand experience riding either the '80-'81 as compared to the '82-'85 that can tell me the performance difference?

Thanks!

LET ME DO SOME LOOKING FOR YA. I COULD OF SWORN THEY USED SAME CARB RIGHT THROUGH, I KNOW JETTING WAS CHANGED IN EARLY SS 440. THAT 8L8 PREFIX MATCHES YOUR MODEL NUMBER ON YOUR CHASSIS. HIS CARB SHOULD ALSO BE STAMPED IF ITS A YAMAHA CARB. 3:16 (yammie tony)

Well I can't confirm the size being different I can tell you the part #s for '80-'81 carb and adaptors is different than '82-'85. But, the pipes, primary springs, weights, secondary spring, and helix part #s all remained the same. This leads me to believe despite a different carb performance changed very little.

I CAN TRACK FOR YA THE FIRST YEAR 1980 SS440 (red) AND THAN AGAIN THE 1984/85/ 86 MODELS. IT LOOKS LIKE BY 1984, AND MAYBE EARLIER, YAMAHA WENT TO A SLIGHTLY BIGGER CARB ON THE SS440. I HAVE TO STILL DIG FOR 81-82-83 INFO. I BOUGHT A 1981 SS440 BRAND NEW AND IT FLEW. ALL OF 48/50 HORSE. 3:16 (yammie tony)

Thanks Tony! I have always been told these things fly so I can't wait to see how it goes. I just want to be sure i don't short change myself by running the smaller carb. I would swap it out for a bigger one, but the one enduroracer sent me is in fantastic shape, very clean and ready to bolt on. I might not easily find the correct carb in such good shape. Plus the early carb adators are still listed, maybe they are still available from Yamaha? Only $44 too.
