What is the stock chain in an 84-89 phazer? do I need a longer one to run an 18tooth top gear?

The stock chain is a 3 roller chain. if you need longer is not only dependant on the size of the top sprocket, but also on the size of the bottom sprocket. These chain and sprockets are easy to identify by there aprearance. They look like 3 bicycle chain and sprockets welded together.
Yamaha has used 2 other chain types. They are known as silent chains and look like a Chevy small block timing chain. The other types can be determined by the shape of the sprocket teath. Rounded teath, silent chain sprockets use rexnord gear sprocket and chain. Square shape teath use the DID chain.
Rexnord chains have more then one plate next to each other. DID has alternating plates.
