I have a 99 Vmax 500 and would like to get some more power without doing any major engine work... does anyone have any recommendations?

Easy. For less than a $50 you can make a nice dent in the preformance.
Get the thin head gasket for it. There is a 91 and 87 octane version. Pick the one you want. Even the 87 one is worth it. Then while you have the motor slightly disassembled notch the top reed stopper per the tech instructions. And if you have money left do a bit of clutch tuning. You will notice a difference right away.

Clutching will make a huge difference on your sled. Maybe vmaxjohn will jump in and guide you in the right direction.
