98 xtc 600 twin oil pump setup

What is it that fails in these and is there a way to fix/repair?
Back in 1997 some(mostly twins) pumps failed(would go to full flow out put) but after 97 Yamaha pumps were very reliable and it was uncommon to see one fail.

no fix just replace the pump with updated unit.

I hard-welded mine and ground to fit. Been working fine since.

Huh??? explain...

If i remember correctly (it was two years ago), the piece that is driven by the waterpump was worn. I tig welded with hard rod then shaped it to fit back around the drive on the waterpump. It's rectangle shaped so it was easy to weld/grind.

Yep, it was a 1 year only thing in 97, mostly 600 twins had the issue, but some 500 twins had problems too. When they fail, they fail full rich, and you will know when that happens.

I put a new updated 98 design in my 97, and it totally transformed my decently powered 600 2 up into a pretty darn fun sled to ride, 1 or 2 up. As a matter of fact, this 97 venture replaced our long term 96 XCR600 and because it is a twin with flat slide rack carbs, and not 3 VM roundslides like the xcr was, it makes this sled great for anyone to ride. Yeah, big bumps don't go over well on the proaction compared to the xtra 10 on the XCR, but when riding 2up keep it under about 50 mph on fairly bumpy trails and it rides like a dream. On smooth trails, this venture is a nice riding but still capable machine. The extra track length helps too. the 600 yami is rated at 97hp, and the XCR was 96hp so comparative hp wise, but the xcr was a faster machine on the top end. I ran down a trespasser last winter on a newer sabercat 500 with my cruiser sled. He wasn't expecting that. The yami 600 gets a lot worse mpg than the Polaris did as well, 10 mpg on the venture and a solid 13-15mpg on the xcr.

yea i could see that working..

I guess, but even getting a good used pump from a 98+ twin would be an easier fix and you would for sure know that it would provide the right amount of oil.

Is that rectangular drive part a removeable/replaceable piece? My pump has gone full open and see a few used pumps with worn drives, just wondering if I can swap that worn piece.

I don't remember. I think it got left together when I welded it. I know it's not separately available from yamaha if that's what your wondering.

I think he was thinking of taking a non worn part and putting it in another pump.
But since you can't get that part separately, I don't think that would help.

Yea that it. When I took the pump off to fix an oil leak I never even looked at the drive part, guess I should have, in hindsight.
