I am having a hell of a time getting this weird brake setuip to work. There's this weird metal plate called a "backup plate" I believe that goes betwen pad and caliper.
The only way I got it to work, and allow the brake disk to turn, is basically wedged between the caliper to leave a gap.
It works, but it SURE LOOKS WRONG
So if some either:
a - has a service manual and can sanp a pic (or scan) the brake section which talks about this plate
b - can snap on overhead picture of the brake assembly from a similar setup.
Like I say, right now it seems to work, but it just looks wrong
Anyone who's fought with phazer/exciter brakes, lets hear from ya
Thanks guys!

Did you look at the microfiche yet? What did you do? Just replace pads? If that plate sticks out to far you need to adjust the screw inside the cover. Needs to be backed off. Thats the self adjust screw that pushes the pads out as it wears. #4 on babbitts microfiche. (I use babbitts cause they go so far back in yrs.) You may need to readjust a few times to get it right but start all the way out. It will probably be to far out and pads wont touch but it a good start. Hope it makes sense.

Ive looked at a dozen microfiches, even yamahas
it does not show this part in the exploded view at all. Yammiegod confirmed its called a back-up plate (or something like that) from his shop manual
Nothing was replaced, chaincase was removed for track swap, nothing changed with pads, cable...its just where this metal spacer is to be placed

See these pics.....both pics show it oriented they way I have it installed,,,and i mean, the disc spins when no brakes, stops when brakes are applied.
If I saw this setup, Id assume its wrong...becasue it looks wrong, but works...I just need re-assurance its right.
Any other way I installed the metal spacer, disk would not turn, even with bolts hand tight

Try this.http://rapidshare.com/files/2978245...vice_Manual.pdf
I tried to copy and paste just the exploded view of brake. Would not let me because it is a PDF.
If this is no help I can take a pic for you. Let me know.

I now realise part of this metal braket is broken off of mine. Not sure what the arm part does?
Any Idea?

now i see what part you mean. The arm attaches threw the oil jug right behide it. with a bolt and nut. Take a look at yours you should see it if its the same as the 91.

but does it go beteen the caliper and back of chaincase? or mount on front of chaincase where bolts go.
When its not acting as a spacer, when the bolts are fionger toght, the disc wont budge....shaft seems aligned perfect...secdondary is perfect
Sucks yamaha doesnt even have a part # for that

I just looked at my buddies 91 and im sure it not the same as yours. The bracket is diff but it is the same as the 92 phazer. so check if it goes to the oil jug. either way your bracket is broke and it mounts to the outside of the caliper. If its not touching youll need to adjust that screw. The mounts are diff but the break is the same!!

It is not a spacer, it goes on the outside of the chain case. you will need to adjust the screw #8 on our post pic. I hope we are talking about the same thing.
