A friend of mine has a 97 vmax XTC 600 and it uses oil a lot faster than it should... a tank of oil will last him a tank of gas if he is lucky... does anyone know what would cause this and how to adjust or fix it?

Yup!!!
I have 2 of them and they both had to have the oil pumps replaced. They have an internal pin that wears and when this happens you get full throttle oiling all the time. You may find a used one here [I did], and it is a fairly smple job to replace it. If no used available bite the bullet and buy a new one from Yamaha.

P.S. that is my all black 97 ER XTC in my icon pic. Don't let anyone tell you that they are strictly a TRAIL machine, HAHA.
