Quick question... My 95 vmax is in dire need of some more preload on the rear shock. It rests nearly in the middle of its travel with no weight on it, once there is a person sitting on it there is almost no travel left...
Any easy way to bump up the preload on the adjuster nut without tearing the entire suspension apart? It looks like there might be a locking collar on the preload perch?

The easiest way is to take it out. You can put machine on side spray the threads with penetrating oil and tap the collars around with a long screw driver and hammer.

that's what I was afraid of, off to the garage I go!
NO NO NO! just loosen the jamb nut and grab the spring coils and spin it around, the nut against the spring should tighten down and stiffen up the rear end. I've done this many times myself. Taking the skid out and putting it back in is far more hassle then the limited space you have to work with doing it the other way.
i think he meant just the shock, there vmaxxer and that is a good way to do it ..just turn the spring

i ended up dropping the rear of the skid, just the last idler. This gave me a little extra room to go nuts with a long snap-on pry bar and dead blow hammer. I wasn't able to spin the nut/spring by hand, not even close, but I was able to move it a notch at a time with the hammer/bar.
