the gf is looking at a 99 srx which has 13000km's and figure for the price of the sled ($1700) I might aswell fresh'n the top end put all new seals, bearings, etc. in it, just wondering what everyone thinks the best piston kit is, I use wiseco but have heard that the SPI moly coated kits are pretty good for the dollar. any thoughts.

Oem..
OEM ....thats 5 to 1 you made up your mind yet ....correct me if i am wrong but oem runs a tighter clearence ...than wisco ...meaning it fits tighter cause oem dont expand as much ....correct....... i personally like a tight fit

tighter skirt/bore tolerances, there a powder forged piston very strong, thicker longer lasting better sealing rings...on and on....

I just did a 01 srx rebuild with oem, and the pistons were coated to the top of the lower ring. I think SPI does the skirts as well, but I say oem

another vote for OEM.
think about it, the sled has 13000 trouble free KM's (that you know of) and your doing the top end just because you think it's time to do so. i would do a compression test first, you might not need to do anything with it this year.
i did the top end at approx the same mileage on my 98, just thought it was time. it now has 22000 trouble free km's and i used all OEM parts during my refresh. why mess with success.

well I guess that answers the question, lol. now what about my coated wiseco's for my race sled, should I throw them up for sale and get some oem's coated or will they be fine?

theres nothing wrong with weiscos in my opinion, but for a stock trail sled its hard to beat the oems, i'd go ahead and use the weiscos in the race sled biggest thing with em is proper warm up

In race situations where every bit of weight and edge is needed weiscos are fine,,but in a stock sled oem all the way.

is there going to be any problems with warming up the pistons even with them coated (skirts and domes)??? currently building the engine for my first improved race sled so still in the question asking/taking advice phase.lol
