Hi guys!
I`ve been having problems with my heated grips for quuite a while now.
They have been working from time to time, they seem to work best late in the season when the temperature gets higher, I dont know for sure, might be that its easier to feel the heat when the weather is warm.
Last weekend we went riding in Sweden and the temperature was around -22 celcius. With no heat in the grips, no handguards and bad gloves I basically couldnt ride, got so cold. (but I guy borrowed med some mittens so I survived, lol)
When I got back home I decided to find out what was wrong.
Checked the grips, connected them to 12v power and they got hot, same about the thumb heat.
Ohmed the switches, OK.
Disconnected the plugs down at the CDI and ohmed the switches from there to make sure the CDI was getting the adjusting signale. OK.
Then I found the yellow/red wire down at the CDI and connected it to a 12v batteri and but the minus to the chassis, and the grips got hot.
So now I knew that the CDI wasnt delivering power to my grips.
Tonight I went to a friend and borrowed his CDI, plugged it into my sled and everything was fine, grips got HOT.
Just for the fun of it I also tried my own CDI, and to my amazement it worked today!! Grips to HOT!!
What the heck is going on?
My only explenation is that something is infact wrong with my CDI, I think that cold temperatures makes some of the electronic parts inside it fail. Is this possible? In the beginning when I tested my own CDI my sled was cold and had been sitting outside, so the CDI was cold. But today it was warm cause it had been sitting in the garage.
I`m going to put both of the CDI`s in the freezer tonight and then measure again tomorrow.. .
I will let you know the result!
Any opionions on this?
Thanks
Joakim

Been fightin the a similar problem on my Viper. Changed CDI ,stator, control knobs. Tried 06 and 07 Apex grips as well. All don't work well enough to keep my hands warm. Tested the 06 with the sled running in my heated garage. They got hot but went for a test ride and froze my fingers, again!
Looking for a way to bypass the CDI and run them direct from the battery. Maybe activate them with a relay using the headlight circuit and then into a rheostat and then to the grips just like my old 97 sx was.

Same problem, Thumb warmer kicks pretty good, but hands freeze unless its warmer outside. Everything checks out, been thru all the wires, replaced reostat.. some times they work some times they dont..

Oh wow. Knock on wood Iv never had problems. I am putting apex handlebars on my Viper and Im curious how thats guna go. Whether Im going to lose some heat or not
My 02 Viper does the same thing.
Here is what I have found. When extreme cold they are worthless. When doing allot of high speed driving they do not keep up. When I get back into the ditch driving (in and out of throttle) they get hot. Found out last time out that if I keep the headlight off High Beam they stay hot. Just assume the high beams are taking all the voltage.

Wire them in parallel. It will be close in ohms to the originals that are wired in series.

mine used to do the same thing ended being a wire rub threw under the handle bar pad.

you fixed a bad connection by swapping things around maybe,,
Hi guys! Thanks for all the replies! :-)
I put the CDI`s in the freezer last night. When I came home from work I took them out of the freezer and went down in the garage and both CDI`s worked fine.
Seems like this is a common problem on the Viper.. =/.
Is it possible to wire them in paralell steinsx700? Will they get hotter?
Daman, I`ve also thought about that. Maybe I just fixed a bad connection by swapping things around. I tried to jiggle on the wiring harness while I measured the power at the grips but no difference.
I took the sled out of the garage tonight and after a 100m ride my hands got warm.
Hope it will last !!!![Smile :) :)](https://totallyamaha.net/images/smilies/smile.png)

I just had the same problem with my 03 viper. My warmers were working intermitenely and my visor plug was the same way ( I have it wired in parallel). Went to start the sled for the first time this year, gave a code. Checked the code, it was for the warmers. I went to take the handlebar pad off and the light went out. Re wired the connections and now its fine.

sometimes it's that simple....
Just came back from riding 70miles.I had hot hands for the first time in two years. I used 06 Apex grips and bar. Wired the grips in parallel now. I had it on low for almost the whole time. I had them wired in series and was still not producing heat. They now feel like my old 97sx grips,HOT!

What is the wiring scheme to change the wiring to parallel? I'm not sure I know the difference between parallel and series. My viper has the same issues as above.
