What do people consider high mileage for an SRX? I am considering buying a 2001-02 SRX. There are a ton on 01' s with between 3000-4000 miles out there for sale. What do you consider the line for mileage when you have to start replacing parts and spending extra $$$ to keep it running good?
That's really a difficult question to answer. Depends on how well previous owners maintened the sled. I had a 98 SRX with over 10,000 mile on it and still worked great. I always kept up with maintenance though.

exacly.....jaydaniels said:That's really a difficult question to answer. Depends on how well previous owners maintained the sled.
i would say anything over 5,000 is high, remember too rings should be replaced every 4-5,000 miles..to keep tip top performance and the risk for engine failure low.
do a search on srx,piston,ect...good reading

just do a coompression test on it... what should it be tho?

comp test wont show the true story...stock should be around 120-130 healthy.

Mine has 6500 miles and never been re-ringed. I plan to rebuild the top end and re-ring this summer.

Thanks for your responses! What about power valves? when do they start to have issues?

they dont as long as you keep servicing them.... recomended service is every 1000kms or sooner...
if pv are keppt clean, never have a problem. need to be cleaned 1000km or less if you are using cheap oil in it (shell synthetic is awful). with ipone or moutl, have gone 1500km between cleanings with no problems at all and they come out looking clean still.

I have over 14,000 miles on my 01 SRX and I just re-ringed it this summer for the first time. I guess they might have a higher potential than other sleds of lasting a long time if they've been maintained properly.
My sled just turned 12300 miles and still strong, replaced jackshaft bearings last year at 11500 as precaution but even they were still good. 1st wheel bearing went out this year. I bought this sled new (98 SRX 700) and even I cant believe it. I'll be honest, I don't really maintain my sled like I should, besides checking bearings and bushings, heck last time I cleaned the PV's was at 4000 miles. But it wasn't till last year I noticed a overrev at cruising speed and I pulled the PV's and had 2 pull-thrus. Even with that it still gps'd 117 on lake last year ( before the PV's pulled thru) . I have used nothing but yamaha oil and premium gas. Compression on all 3 cyl. is still between 116 and 120. That said, I wasn't really a brand loyal guy, now I am. Stephfg , when you re-ringed yours, did it make a difference?

i have 7,000 miles on mine and never re-rung untill this last summer, looked great inside, probably didnt need it but i got a hole in my cooler once and overheated it prety bad last ride of last season and figured id be safe and re-ring. being you dont know the history i would probably consider re-ringing, if thats all you need its not really bad expensive and you have peace of mind. You will have all summer to do it.

I have an 02 that i replaced the rings and pistons on at 10,000 miles. The sled now has 13.500. I just replace stuff as it needs it.

don't know yet. Only 60 km so far this year, and I haven't done a compression test yet either. I guess I could check that. it did have a lot of blowby, so I know it was time.ssrrxx said:Stephfg , when you re-ringed yours, did it make a difference?

I have been looking at SRX's over the past two years to buy since I want to add another one to the fleet. I have seen 2000 - 2001 SRX's with 1000 miles that were stored outside, trailered on open trailers, no maintenance at all that I wouldn't pay $500 for. I have seen other SRXs with thousands of miles that were well cared for, they look and run like new. If you buy a high mileage sled that has been well cared for, it will not need much to keep it running for many, many thousands of miles, just need to do the right maintenance.

I feel like there are a lot of good 01-02s out there for a good price. What do you think will happen once winter winds down. Will there be a lot more and for even better deals? Would like to pick one up now but am willing to wait. Thanks for your replies

There are always better deals at the end of the season and into the spring and summer months. I am rebuilding a 2000 SRX right now for my son. As soon as this one is done, I'll be shopping for another 2000 - 2001 SRX to completely rebuild. When you find a sled you are seriously interested in, take sevarl pics of it and either post them here or just let us know. We'll give you opinions and advice on the sled. The OEM parts are still available and there are many sources of used parts so rebuilding a complete sled is not a problem.

I agree. I trailer mine at both ends of the season (15 minutes) because I don't have a choice. I did it a few weeks ago and the bolts are all salty, even on some of the cylinder bolts - and it was covered. I leave from home for 99% of my rides and it stays clean. I store it inside and in the summer I coat it with WD 40 and nutzlube. It still looks new. This summer was the worst for it... since it was my summer project, I didn't summerize it. I won't do that again.rx1jim said:I have been looking at SRX's over the past two years to buy since I want to add another one to the fleet.
