I have a 96 V max 600.
Yesterday I was out on the trail.
After about 6 miles the engine was starting to run a little strange. It was backfiring a small amount.
I had it quit on me twice (Just like I had shut it off)
I waited about a minute and it started right up and continued riding.
The third time it quit and locked up (I could not pull it over)
I pulled the belt and tried turning it over on the clutch side.
After 5 minutes of sitting it turned over but no compression.
I pulled it home and today it feels like the compression is back.
I have not tried to start it yet or do a compression check.
I pulled the plugs and they look like it was running hot.(Brown in color)
I think I should start at the oil pump to make sure its getting oil.
I checked the cable and the adjustment,it seems to be right on.
How do I check to see how much oil it is pumping and what are the specs?
Thanks!

Did you do a compression check on the engine? The sled should used 32 oz of oil to 12 gals of gas or 50 to 1 ratio. Have the carbs been cleaned lately? Did you look in to the cylinder and see what the pistons and cylinder bore looks like any scoring? I would check a few things like that first before trying to restart the machine. I would check these things out and then I would premix oil in the gas and then test the oil pump while riding it. Its not good when it locks up something I would be sure is scored up in the cylinders. Good Luck

just a guess but if the plugs are brown and not gray/white, then the crank is bad.
