I have to install some drive cogs onto a new drive shaft for a 96 xtc 600. Do I have to take them to a shop and get them pressed on or can it be done without a press. Does anybody have the measurements for a 4 driver set up. I was thinking I could use a pipe and tap them onto the shaft.

I would recommend using a press. I did it without a press and it to me longer to just put two drive cogs on a new driveshaft than it to to dissasemble and reassemble the sled.
i just got done doing mine , i couldnt picture doin it with out a press.

Does anyone know the measurements for each driver placement. I don't have the old driveshaft to go by. The guy tossed the old shaft.
Since you have everythinga apart it would be a good time to have the drive shaft checked to make sure it is straight. Even with Yamaha's great engineering and manufacturing you would be surprised how much the drive and jack shafts can be out. One other thing that I did to my sled after having the drive shaft straightened was to put the drive cogs on and then put the assembly in a lathe to turn the cogs round relative to the drive shaft. This reduces vibration and drivetrain drag.
When you put the drive shaft back in, pump the area between the speedo housing and tunnel full of grease to keep water and debris out of there which will help to keep the rust out. Keeping the rust out saves the life of the drive pin between the drive shaft and speedo drive unit as well as out of the bearing.

This is a new shaft, I will check for straightness just in case. Still need to kno where to place the cogs on the shaft. Is there a equal space left on both ends of the shaft. This is s 4 driver set up.
