i checked the wires under the motor,no rub tru all the wires have contineuity.does one of thoes relay looking things by the ecm have any thing to do with the tack/fuel gauge? :dunno:

I have another tach that i tried it still doesn't work. i have contenuity on all the wires from the tach all the way to the ecm and the regulator/relay beside the ecm....and its snowing like crazy here

I just fixed mine had exact same problem and it was hard to find and you might just have continuity cause they are touching eachother. I had 4 wires rubbed thru. had to pull carbs and everything to pull thru but was still hidden cause the tape made it look black.

I took the tape and wire covering completely off the whole harness, and inspected and cleaned all wires from the tach plug to where it goes across to the ecm and relay/regulator i checked for continuity because i thought maybe one of the wires was broken inside. Does anyone think the ecm or relay/regulator could have anything to do with it? My temp light still flashes three times on start up

yes lights still work even the tack and fuel gauge light work. i am going to check the cdi magneto tomorrow if its not that, does anybody know how to check the cdi box?

i need a tach

hay guys i have same dang problam my sons 98 srx i used the teac & volt reg a buddy let me use a stater & no nothing!!!.even a cdi box no.same thing w/ the wires cleand them too.STUMPED!!! :letitsnow

Did you check the smoothing condensor? Its a round looking thing about 1 1/2 diameter three inches long. Its up near the headlight. The fuel gauge is one of the few things on the dc circuit. Is that a single headlight sled? The condensor is actually a capacitor. When an electric start sled's battery is dead the tach does not work. So its likely the tach does not work when the smoothing condensor is bad because non electric start sled use the capacitor instead of the battery. I'm going to try an exeriment this weekend with it. J

i tried a differant condensor it did not work.i tested the stator today all feilds wer good but the lighting coil was on the week side so i spent $360 on a new stator today.put it all back together expecting it to be good, boy was i dissapointed. tomorrow i will try a differnt cdi box. my parts sled is a 2001 so the voltiage regs are differnt looking mabey its one of thoes? any way anybody got a next to new srx 4 sale, i dont want to give in and buy one of thoes new 4 strokes 2 strokes are like the old muscle cars

u must have a rubb thru but u didnt find it yet .keep searching u will find ...

the cdi box and regulators are not the same on my 01 .the 01 has 12 volts going to the condensor . my sxr 600 has 6 volts going to the condensor.i tried the dc regulator off sxr on my 98 [that has no voltiage going to the condensor] it still had nothing not even 6 volts.dont you think i would get 6 volts at the condensor plug if the dc reg was bad

start by checking your fuel guage its easier ...black and red wire bring the voltage and the and the green and black is the ground ...ground the black and green if the gaz meter work your ground is short somewhere u will need to unplug to check and put a new ground ..u have a 4 wire connector for that guage make sure its not full of corosion...i think it is close where the hood open ....does the light of that cluster work ??

I'm quite certain any 98 later sled that only has 6 volts has something wrong with it. The single headlight sleds have 12v ac to the headlight but have clean 12volt dc to the fuel gauge. If you look at the wiring diagram the 12v ac never if connected to the fuel gauge. However the 12v ac to the headlight is the same as the tach. There are not interaction between the tach and the cdi according to the wiring diagram. I believe the tach is measuring the frequency of the ac line to determine rpm of the stator. I would be wrong.

The dual bulb sleds have 12v dc all over and run a cdi line to the tach my guess is it measuring the firing of frequency for rpm..

Know to throw one more twist the sleds with smart carbs have a totally different layout then what I have stated above.

Later today or next weekend I'm going to unplug the condensor and see what happens. It should not effect the tach but I'm certain it has in the past. If it does I have no idea what the tach is using to gauge the rpms short of an internal circuit within the gauge that connects the tach to the dc of the fuel guage for power and then it measure the lighting coil frequiency. There should be no interaction between the tach and the dc circuit. But I have experienced it before.
