Reverse info needed

This is my first Yamaha Sled. Love it but the reverse only engages sometimes and sometimes the lever wont go back. Is this normal? 1997 sx600.
I know the clunk is normal after engaging but why wont it engage properly all the time?

Yes but when it does engage I can put it back in fwd and then back in reverse no problem several times. Do these gears sometimes hit each other or not line up automaticly.

yes it sounds like your gears are not meshing together all the time ...check the free play in the linkage and check chain tensioner ...

at times you may need to move just an inch or two further forward to allow the gears to mesh when trying reverse..

I installed reverse on both my proaction sleds years ago and both do this very thing FREQUENTLY... Normal for my sleds.... tj
