Getting ready to install a electric start on my XT. I got the starter off a 95 vmax 500LE.

Question 1 - Manual shows removing rotor assembly ( im assuming this is the flywheel ) with a puller. Do i need one? If so where can i get one?

Question 2 - Manal shows ring gear already on rotor assembly, my kit just has the ring gear. Once again ill assume the ring gear will mount to the rotor assembly i have??

Intall seems pretty straight forward in manual, does anyone have any tips or tricks to make this as easy as possible!!!

Thanks for the help!!!

if i remember correctly the starter ring was part of the flywheel ,not a bolt on piece on the 94-96's. and every time i tried to get on off i needed a puller , you might get luucky and it pop off without it but i've never been that lucky.

I will get a puller for the flywheel. Still up in the air about the flywheel it self as far as if it is one piece or not. It depends on what part look up you check. Help from anyone that has put one one recently would be great. All the other parts in the kit check out fine but the ring grear/rotor assembly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Snow on the way so dont want to tear into it if i cant get it done not having the correct flywheel.

If no ones sure on this i can get one from evilbay. They have two for a fair price. My xt flywheel/ring gear # is 8bp-85550-00-00

They have one from a 1995 VMAX DX 500 # 8cb-85550-00-00

They have one from a 1994 phazer 2 # 88h-85550-00-00

The prefix is different but the part number is the same, will either of these work. I would have to bet that the vmax DX one would for sure

Speaking from experience as I also had a 600XT that I installed electric start on. You will have to get or find a flywheel that has teeth machined into it, as the non electric start flywheel looks almost the same as the electric start one except there is no teeth on the outer edge. The part number you are going to look for is 8BP-85550-00.

Well the hunt is on for the right flywheel. Do you guys know if that flywheel from the VMAX DX 8CB will work or does it have to be the one for the xt the 8BP. Under the parts lookup for the vmax dx under generator it shows the flywheel for e- start with this next to it (for 8BP2 ). Just trying to figure out if the one on ebay will work. Thanks a ton guys.

that is eactly what the one on my 94 dx looks like. im thinking it would be a safe bet that it'll work on yours.

have installed 4 electric starts this yr for family menmbers on the 94-96 v maxes
the 94-95 electric start flywheels have the starter ring as part of the flywheel
the 96 is a one yr thing and looks like the correct one but is missing all the teeth, old yamaha mech. stated it was to make it heaveier to keep revs up ??
anyhow you ll need a flywheel with the teeth and a flywheel for any yr 94-96 will work for you. as for needing a puller, yes you ll need one . Great lakes snowmobile in clarksville should have the flywheel you need call paul over there he ll treat you right
