I have a 1998 Vmax 700. I noticed it starting to engage real hard and jerk as I started to give it gas. It also started making a "clunking" sound. I lifted up the hood and took the belt off and noticed that the secondary has about 4 inches of play in it. What could this be?

Sounds like your chain may be too loose. Check and make sure the adjuster is finger tight.

On the chain case . Down beside the dipstick there is a long bolt with a locknut facing toward the front of the sled. Loosen the locknut (14mm) and turn in the long bolt until finger tight. Back off half a turn then tighten locknut. Check the oil level in the case while you are there.
The only way I see you having 4 in. of play would be that your bearings are out
Its got at least 4" its really sloppy back and forth. how much play is it supposed to have?
