I turn the key to start my 98 vmax 700 and nothing. Sounds like its not getting a connection. Do it 4-5 more times then it will finally turn over and start. Is there a relay on this thing? If so whats the part #? Is it the switch?

sounds like just a bad connection someplace, start from the key switch and work down unplugging things and and inspecting, sometimes it's that simple.
yes there's a relay.

red/white
Check main battery cable connections. Follow the main + positive battery cable and when you find relay probe a test light on the red/white wire. Turn key to crank it should light up. If it doesnt check straight red wire next to it with test light it should light up and is the 12v feed. If in both steps the light is on check the Black wire and make sure it is grounded. When above tests check out and there is no 12v power going to starter battery cable when in crank position the relay is faulty. If the test light is on with the Straight Red wire and you turn the key to crank probe the Red/White wire with test light. If the light is not on the key switch is faulty or broken wire in key circut. There are 2 10 amp fuses on the relay also but you have said it will crank over after a while so they should be good. If every thing checks out Check amp draw on starter cable, brushes could be worn badly or hanging up
