Test run, Viper vs MXZ800 vs SXR
We ran with a good friend yesterday many of the Southwester MI trails. My friend is a diehard ski doo fan, rides a 08 MXZ 800 renegade. We ran many trails snowpacked and fresh 15" powder snow. The Doo has a 1.5" 136 track, the Viper 1.25 136 track the SXR 121 1" studded 144 track. Full throttle runs packed trails the Viper could out run every time, by about 3 sled lengths. Powder area, the Doo won by a large margin, maybe 10 to 15 sled lengths. Tight trails the SXR could not be seen by either of the Doo or Viper, I actually thought they got lost or took a wrong turn. The Doo has very good suspension for the small ripple bumps, seem to be non existant, where the SXR and Viper feel every small lump. The Doo also felt extremely light but not sensitive enough of steering for fast trail runs. The Doo also had alot of vibration in the bars, I beleive it was do to the track lugs. We all left with a different understanding of the sleds. I still prefer the handleing of the SXR, my son loves the power of the Viper, and my friend prefers the ultra smooth ride of the Doo. Some things never change. lol Oh, same miles over same trails, Yamy's used over 2 gallons each, more fuel than the Doo. Al

Fuel. 2 gallons of fuel. What I didnt understand was did it only use 2 gallons, more than the doo or 2 gallons more than the doo? How many total miles? And I second the question about the SX-R. Did it leave everyone or trail everyone? I have both 700's and the SRX handles corners far better than the SX.
I assume the powder run wins were due to the track. Since the Viper obviously has more grunt with good traction.
You need to adjust the SX suspension if you feel every bump. It's way better than the SRX at absorbing whooped out trails, and should mimick the Viper in handling.

thats wierd... me n my buddy almost filled up at the same time.. i had about 10km's more of used fuel to his fill up.... we where diong wide open runs on a lake...
my 01 srx to his 05 skidoo gsx 800.... i used abit more then half a tank and he was right above the quarter empty line...
dont know the exact milage of the total run but yea... just remember him stoping and saying he needed gas soon... and i was shocked seeing i had just below half line

The SXR outran everyone on the tight trails. The 800 Ski doo used 2 gallons less fuel than each. The SXR used 5.2 gallons and the Viper used 5.3 gallons. The Doo used 3.3 gallons, Fuel. We did not fuel up again together on the second fuel stop. The SXR always outhandles the Viper in the tight trails. The could be from having a standard 121 vs 136 on the Viper. The Doo's suspension is great, but feels spongy for my personal taste. We all were switching back and forth between sleds all day long. I have the High BOSS seat and the Viper doesn't. That is a big differance. I can move much better from side to side with the BOSS seat. I just feel in more control on the SXR. The Ski's are different also, the SXR has the stock GYTR ski's and the Viper has stock regular ski's skegs are the same, 6" shapers. Al

My last run this year my buddy has a '05 poo 500 and my SXR was using only 1/2 gal more then him,i was averaging 13mpg.

I am wondering now if the reason we used more fuel was the fresh snow of 10 to 15". I am sure the Doo with 1.5 136 got better traction, less slippage. I usually get 13 to 14 mpg. but this last run both the SXR and the Viper got just at 10 mpg. Al

The calibration on my '01 leaves a bit to be desired. Lots of full reserve but the needle moves real fast from 1/2 on down with maybe 1/2 gallon of empty reserve.

The newer Doo is EFI, right? That makes sense that you would get better mileage out of an FI setup than a carb setup. Carbs don't adjust for temp, humidity, and altitude, they are set once and unless adjusted run for a specific set of environmental conditions.
The track length definately makes a diff in turns too. The outcome is not that surprising now knowing more of the variables. I bet a SRX would leave all of them in the dust on tight trails. Of course, you would need a chiropractor because the suspension sucks for any kind of bumps.
No sled will dominate in all categories. What is surprising is how bad the Doo beat the Viper in the powder. I guess that extra .25 of track makes quite the diff in powder. Lug height > track length.... hmmm. That's enlightening.
