Before I bought this ATV it had been run into a telephone pole. The first time we got it to start we had to remove the breather and put a hand over the intake of the carb. Gas would spit back out of the carb untill it fired. When it did fire the motor would not idle on its own and sounded really off. It also made the exhaust pipe coming out of the motor glow red. We knew there was a problem. We then cleaned the carb, checked compression, new spark plug, reset the valve clearance, put another stator on, and visually checked the woodruffkey. The carb has been cleaned twice. Compression checked out fine. Stator was not bad to begin with!(luckily I found a good used one for only $70 with shipping). We put it back together last night and it did not want to start. I decided to remove the muffler thinking that maybe something had gotten knocked loose blocking the air flow. It fired up! After a little running it would idle on its own. After a few minutes of running the pipe was again red hot so we shut it down. One other thing we had checked was the timing marks. We removed the inspection cover over the top timing chain sprocket found top dead center and looked at the marks. The marks were off just a little, less than a tooth of the sprocket. We physically blew throught the muffler and could feel air comming through. Muffler does not appear blocked. I need help!! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
