1979 excel v won't start

I ran my '79 excel v 540 out of gas last night. I tried to use starting fluid to get it to go with new gas (no luck). This was outside in the dark, so I will work on it tonight, but what do I do next? I've had it for 2 yrs, and it starts second pull every time.
Also, on a side note, if anyone has a jackshaft bearing and bearing housing for this sled, I need one. The housing is basically destroyed, and the shaft has over an inch of play in any direction. Thanks.

Check spark, check for wet plugs (getting fuel). No spark? Try a new plug. No fuel? try pressurizing the fuel tank to assist pump in getting fuel to carb. Don't use starting fluid. can't help with bearing or housing.
