Idler wheel rubber shot!
I have replaced the idler wheels on my 97 vmax sx 700 twice. I removed all of the picks the first time because they had plastic backers and where coming loose and tearing the wheels up....so I thought. Bought 6 new 5.125" Idler wheels (again) and after 60 miles the rubber is coming off 4 of the 6! I am ready to pull my hair out, they don't look like they are getting hot, the wheels on the back axle look good, and the last owner put hyfax savers up front and those 2 idlers look good. Can anyone offer any advice?

I dont see any evidece of the track walking around. The stud backers used to ride under the wheels but I removed every stud and thought I had fixed it. If something was worn and let the track walk around wouldn't it tear up the large 7 inch wheels to? I have an 81 srv and the idler wheels look the same, the rubber is very thin. The sleds I ride with are slightly newer and have beefier rubber on the idlers than I do. Do you think that would improve my chances? What and where are the w bushings and how do I check them? I can't pull the track or the carriage side to side. What does it mean when a track "ratchets". Thanks a bunch for trying to help me out, this is my first year owning sleds.
ratcheting is when your track is lose and the drive wheels slip. I dont see how that can cause your idler wheels to wear.

thanks for the help. Anybody use parts unlimited stuff? I am thinking the wheels may be crap, I am thinking of kimbex wheels for the newer srx sleds the rubber looks beefier. What track would be best for this application and should it be studed or not?
depends alot on what type of riding you do. What trail conditions are like etc etc. The ripsaw 1.25 is a good on trail choice thats what I have however it has lost quite a few lugs(4k miles). I have a friend wth an aggressor 1.25 looks good i wouldnt mind trying it(spendy though). As for studding if lakes or icy trails are were you ride mostly get them(think you need to stick with 1'' though). check out snowtracks usa they have some new take offs.
