helped my stepson today going over his first sled.I worked on clutching,he worked on carbs.Got them all cleaned up and back in.Then the sled wouldn't start up.He pulled at least 30 times and forgot the kill switch was on.By that time plugs were soaked and fouled.Put new plugs in,I figure engine is flooded and held throttle tight to bar to fire it up.This worked as in it fired. But it won't keep running. It was smoking as if the choke was on full..but wasn't.Choke plungers are seated properly.Motor just won't rev up..have to keep throttle pinned to about engagement speed to try and clear the motor, but nothing.Let go of throttle and motor dies. You think this has something to do with the carb floats or what???We are pissed off that this is happening. He had the sled running prior to bring in the garage and it sounded sweet. We are taking carbs off again.. :o| :o| .What did we do wrong, nothing else was touch on the sled. Please help us as we want to go riding tonight also..THANKS

Did you rev it a bit to clear all of the puddled fuel out of the crankcases? What about the fuel screw settings? did they get set back to the proper specs??

reved it up but no clearing.Didn't touch fuel screws yet.Got to get a pic of the twin carbs. He is now thinking he didn't connect the oil lines properly from carb to the tee..he can't remember.Floats are good and he is blowing out all passages again.

on the carb there are 2 black lines..do they go to the tee with hose to oil pump? And 2 clear lines go to the fitting on the bottom of the float bowl?.I think Scotty mixed them up.These carbs are sure a different setup then the triples..

My 2000 500 Vmax Just has two black lines gioing to the bottom of the carbs from the fuel pump. Just like all my tripples. The carb heater lines, the choke , throttle cables are slightly different. Probally something goofy in the carbs.

sounds like someone set them down the wrong way and mabe knocked the float level off and poilets are not submerged now .......or the cases got a lot of fuel in them ...pull plugs and put your finger over the hole and pull it over a good time or two ....just watch out for fuel in the eye ,,,,been there ...

yep..these carbs are so different then I am used to.The 2 black lines go to the oil cable tee and the 2 clear lines go to the bottom nipples on the bowls. He mixed then up and is learning the hard way to mark your lines and remember what you take off and remember how to put on.We hooked lines up this way...float bowls were empty and basically she fired up in 2 pulls(go figure) and idled perfectly.Took it for a ride tonight and she works fine.Got good throttle response them 600 twins..wow.I am impressed.Even raised the ski's on it in hard snow.

Jeff... we went to ST.Adolph bridge area went down the river and looked back and the vmax wasn't behind me.So decided to go back up and pick the not so steep path.Turns out I ended up hitting around the middle of the hills and almost bit the bullet tonight.Started going up the bank and with about 4 bumps on the climb ,not going to fast..looked up and noticed the last climb was a vertical straight up to heaven... :o| had no choice to nail it,ski's straight up to the sky and f-in just punched it.Landed on the edge of the vertical and just spun the crap of the snow on top..almost came to a dead stop..... :o| :o| :o| .Was thinking sled and me going backwards down the hill, but that friggin 1.25 ripsaw grabbed for me.I saw this climb in the afternoon and I wouldn't try it..night time you have more balls or something.
It was like hitting a brick wall..close one.

so today we got carbs cleaned twice, tore apart clutches and man they were filty.Cleaned her all up.Set the helix at 80 wrap with the red spring.

noticed during the ride, the speedo quite working.Got home and took cabel off the housing..broken.The guy whoever did some work in this area didn't turn the housing horizontal but vertical,so the cable had a 90 degree bend in it..as if it would last long like this...dumb azz.

Was up and down that hill a few times today .There is one nasty spot. Left that one for you.

if your usage of oil/gas yesturday is still 22 to 1,then I would say your oil pump is shot.I will check the markings during the week and see if the marks line up at the pump.Don't forget to order a speedo cable also..Maybe talk to daman about the jetting..you could order new jetting also.

Yeah wondering if theres any oil left in the tank lol I posted a question about the jetting already. Mind you i'm pretty blind maybe it was a 15?.8 and I read it as a four. Ahhhhh Also the plugs that were on there originally look pretty good so I dunno.

lol I'm positive it was a four. Just wondering why it was changed to begin with? It makes you wonder sometimes but she was running good and I mean I'm pretty sure the last owner never touched a thing and put on about 1000 km, the plugs that came out of the sled when I got it didn't appear to be lean. As for the oil usage 22-1 is rich on oil and leaning out the fuel but most of my riding was done at 3/4 throttle and up, not a lot of idling. She doesn't smoke too bad either. I'm thinking I will adjust the oil pump for sure and possibly order jets. Another thing I was thinking was considering the compression is around 110 per cyl maybe it was blubbering at wot with the 158s and somebody jetted it down until it was crisp again. Other than that I dont see any reason why somebody would of changed them but its just a thought..
