this just randomly hit me lastnight while i was driving home....

a lot of the skidoos simply start the motor backwards to go into reverse... why couldnt we just do this on any other 2 stroke without reverse.... on the electric starts all you would need would be another selonoid and a push button... it would be a bit harder on a pull start as you would have to wrap a rope around the primary backwards and yank..... the only thing i am worried about would be possible negative voltages from the stator?? and breaking the regular recoil from spining it backwards... from what i understand everything else should be ok to run backwards???? what do you guys think?

Two sets of ignition pickups on engine? perhaps another on op siode of ignition plate double pole double throw toggle switch Simple sounding isnt it.

The secondary will not shift out at all in reverse without a reverse ramp. The sled will still move though enough for what you would usually use reverse for, it would just stay in low gear. There are some interesting reads on the web about the system that SkiDoo uses.

The electric starter would not work backwords. The inertia-type drive gear would not move out.

You should be able to change the timing electronically and have a switch operated reverse circuit.

I think the oil pump will pump either way.

It would not hurt the recoil- it would not be engaged.

The stator output is AC - I do not think it would hurt the diodes in the CDI box or voltage regulator - not sure though.

Mercury did it on snowmobiles and outboards way back when.

Just some thoughts - it would never be worthwhile to do it.

EZ go golf carts used a K295ax Kohler back in the 80's with a belt generator /
starter .....shifter on dash rotated the stator slightly depending on what
direction you wanted to go and a switch spun the gen/start the direction
you needed.....Reverse was very "out of tune" but how far does a golf cart
need to go backwards....maybe 10 ft....
a Yamaha injection pump may be trouble going backwards and ding is correct
(of course) about the secondary pulley....might need to install some "buttons"
on the back side.....
If you can figure out how they held and rotated the stator , you just need to
shut it off and rotate the stator and turn key on just before it quits....
I expect the modern sleds start in reg direction and when you select reverse,
shut off spark , just before it stops rotating , electronicaly retard the spark
and refire the engine ,,backwards....
Set a kids mini enduro 80 points once , by eye , and he gave it a kick and it started ..reved it up , dumped the clutch and ran the handle bars into his
gut as it tore off backwards...He found it too much fun just bump starting
it in the direction he wanted to play and wouldn't let me fix it..
