My buddy has a 98 SRX 600. It seems to foul plugs a lot. He always freaks out about it idling too long or letting it load up. My 98 700 very rarely fouls them but his seems to do it a lot.

Not sure what his jetting is, but the was looks ok...maybe a little rich. Pistons are all very similar, dark in the middle, cleaner around the edges. He cleaned the power valves, and runs amsoil.

ne problem I have is that I can't seem to convince him to clean his carbs! He thinks because he keeps his sled indoors that they don't need cleaned. He also won't run 93 octane. Most times he runs 87 or 89 and sometimes puts octane boost in the tank. I keep urging him to clean carbs, but he thinks it's not necessary!

Do you think dirty carbs could cause plug fouling?

My wifes '98 700 is doing the same thing this year. It runs for 1/2 hour or so and then need to change plugs cause they foul right away. I cleaned the carbs 3 times, but think im gonna bring em in to have then in the ultrasonic cleaner. Help us!!!

Run br9ecs plugs not br9es, That will make a difference. Tell him to clean his carbs, if he has never cleaned them they need to be cleaned! I am not saying that is what's causing this issue, But I know when I cleaned mine and jetted it right it stopped fouling the br9es plugs that I used to run.

MY 98 600 did the same kind of thing, but it was only when you first started it, after it
ran a while it would be fine until it sat for a few days. I think the 600s are fat on the bottom, so leaner pilots would probabley help this. I would ride mine off the trailer and around the hotel and open the hood and drop some snow on my pipes to see which one was dead and change the plug. the rest of the trip would be great. Tryed alot of things but never changed my pilot jets, but after 9800 miles she blew and now serves
as my parts sled for my 01

Mine runs and idles perfect....no jetting change other than my mag cylinder is one size down on the main to make all the plugs look the same. 146.3,146.3, 150to148.8. Yes I could be more spot on but with fuel nowadays f-it!!!! I have stock pilots and a little bit of a hanging idle with the fuel screws out to 1 3/4. I never ever foul a plug with extended idles for warmup. I think you have a weak stator or coils or something electrical going on, if your carbs are clean. I would clean them before moving to the next thing on the list! Make sure you use br9ecs's. Oh and I used to use yamalube and currently use amsoil intercepter.

My 600/780 will idle all day long if I want it too. I've fouled one plug the whole time I've had it and that was after it spent an half an hour upside down in a tree out in Cooke.

RYAN, exactly how did you end up in a tree upside down? that could not of been good!
I bet there was an OH SHIT! this is gonna HURT involved!!!!!

now thats what i call a positive attitude!!!!

Joys of riding in the mountains(tree well got the best of me). No worries though - just some time shoveling and sawing.

Fule screws are 1 1/2, stock jetting, br9es plugs with .00028 gap. I cleaned his carbs tonight.
Now he tells me hes running 87 octane and it may have 3 kinds of oil in the tank...

I also have noticed, (something he thinks is ok) that when you turn the high beams on the gauge lights dim way down. Sometimes the tach drops to zero for a second when you hit the high beam switch and his lights really dim when you let off and when you brake. It was fouling plugs on different cylinders too....not just the same one.

.....also....I had never rode his 600 until tonight. I noticed that it has very noticeably less power, and while we both have the same can, it sounded entirely different....not as high pitched as mine. Do the 600's really feel that different and sound that different? I would not know, because I have only ever ridden my 700.

My 600 and 700 sound very similar. the 600 sould run strong, mine would pull 105 to
107 on the speedo. It sounds like he needs to give that sled some T L C. attention to
details and maintenance are very important!!!!

br9es - will fire 1mm from cylinder wall
br9eya - will fire 2mm from cylinder wall
br9ecs -will fire 3mm from cylinder wall

you can run whatever plug you like , aslong as you have compensated all circuits for it , its more of a race application , in this case yamaha designed it to run br10ecs that is a colder plug than the 9's .... and youll get away with 9ecs , because there fat from factory, , i have had 3 600's and they would foul plugs untill my walet was empty , untill i pilot them down 1 size , adjust the idle hang if any by turning the fuel screw out 1/8 @ a time , it will run a lot crispier , and it will idle all day long

if he's low on power pull the heads and i bet the 9es have rounded off the pistons on the exaust side , thats what they will do
