97 vmax 600 xtc using a lot of oil.

I went ridin for the first time this year and noticed it was using a lot of oil. The pump is adjusted perfect. How can I tell if the pump is working? I know that if it fails it stays wide open. The sled is running fine and the plugs look good. Maybe it always used a lot but i noticed it this year.
 
I think that back in 97 there was a tech bulletin on the oil adjustment
I beleive the book showed to align the two lines but that was WAY to rich
I think this was right down on the pump?
Daman correct me?

Right SNAKEBIT i got the TSB around here someplace,they actually recommended when adjusting pump adjust it to within 2mm BEFORE the lines line up.
