Hi guys,
was riding Candle Lake yesterday on trails with little snow but off trail with about 18"
Only doing about 30kph when noticed engine running lean!!! Way too crisp for 1/4 throttle. No Burble. So, i happened to glance at the gauge and noticed temp light on so went off trail and blipped the throttle to throw snow on the tunnel cooler and light stayed on...so I engaged the choke for a second and light stayed on so i continued slowly into the deep stuff again and blipped the throttle to throw more snow and light went off....Problem solved right? Nope, then i could hear the noise that you don't wanna hear when your on a two smoke...yup that rattle coming from under the hood! Well I shut it off and upon inspection figured the mag side detonated cuz would not fire any more.
So, sled is bone stock on the carbs, Just cleaned them 2 rides before and fuel screws were 2 1/8 turns from soft seat. Oh yeah...temp was -10C or 24F
Ran the sled for another 80 kms on 2 cylinders so more damge to be expected, but I am baffled as to why this sled was lean/hot with low rpm? Any Yammie that I ever had with stock jetting is so rich on the bottom that it burbles like crazy!!! Any thoughts?

Actually most burn downs happen at mid range cruse your on the needles and if needles are lean you will squeak if held there long enough.
thats why one needs to check jetting on all circuits, low, mid ,high they all over lap some,

Ya, but this actually happened I believe on the idle circuit. It was literally 1/4 throttle....we werent travelling very fast at all!
Thanks for the reply.

circuits over lap and rely on each other, pilots happen to be plugged it will run slightly leaner.
last time carbs were cleaned was???

During your riding earlier, were you getting any DCS flashes at all prior to the overheat light?

2 rides ago...actually last Wednesday if were getting technical.LOL
The day before it cooked the wife was riding it on a 70km ride roughly same temps and conditions.

Maybe the temp light was on for most the ride + went unnoticed?

I dunno Bob, the wife was riding it before. It's hard to see the guage because of the MTN Handlebars. You have to stand up to see it.
I did see the DCS light at the 50km mark. that was 40 km after the piston cooked. I ran it on 2 cylinders the rest of the trip with the choke on slightly and periodically. When I saw the DCS light i had the choke OFF for about 5 km. Definitely lean on the low speed!
Maybe not clean enuf carbs or bad fuel???

sounds like a combo of deto bad fuel lean settings,,dunno need to tear into it and trouble shoot, post some pics.

Yep......Will do! I was just confused to the lean bottom end as every Yammie triple I've owned with the stock jetting almost pukes fuel out at 1/4 to half throttle at the kinda temps we were riding in!!!

yep they usally are,,theflamanguy said:every Yammie triple I've owned with the stock jetting almost pukes fuel out at 1/4 to half throttle at the kinda temps we were riding in!!!
The Viper has a somewhat lean midrange from the factory. Combine this with poor quality fuel and bam, piston gone. Been there done that. 2 identical sleds, 2 identical setups, 2 DIFFERENT fuel sources, 1 melted down and the other pulled it back.

I also understand or heard that it's oil ratio is 100:1!!!

they usally are but thats not your problem here untill we see pics to rule anything like that out.theflamanguy said:I also understand or heard that it's oil ratio is 100:1!!!
how did it seem on oil? good ,bad, ok?

My thoughts were that it wasn't oiling by the looks of the electrodes!!! Pretty clean. But they were new plugs with only 80 kms on them. But, to be safe, I syphoned from the oil resevoir to the fuel tank to run it on the remaining 2 cylinders for the rest of the ride
