I"ve noticed for a little while now that the elec. sysytem seems to be getting weaker. I usually am the leed sled and do a lot of night riding. So therefor high beam is on all the time. I have measured all the wires and they seem to check out, but I have noticed fuel milage dropping and sled running a little funny. I have gone thru the carbs clutches track bearing compression etc. The sled has 17 000 km on it and still works pretty well but there are a few things getting tired so I have been changing out parts but that is something I have been wondering about being weak. Could this be an issue?

Some guys clean the stator and had good luck with the lights working better.

now here is a question to you guys.Would the stator be a cause for a sled not reaching higher speeds or not.All my electrical is good and lights to.It may just be that the engine is starting to get a little tired and needs a rebuild.I know compression doesn't tell everything, but I am at 125-126-125 across,at least it is consistent. Some add oil to the cyl. and do a compression test again. If the numbers climb higher..does that mean there is blowby going on or what???

I sprayed down the stator with brake kleen only. Not a real good clean but never the less a bit cleaner. It does seem to be better but not what I was hoping for. As for rpm and performance/milage I'm yet to find out. I will however say that I still get 8500 at WOT.

well I was wot today at 8500-8600.But could look into it in the summer.I really am starting to think that something is wrong with my speedo.Maybe it hangs up at 100mph for some reason..

carb or brake cleaner is great for many parts of all metallic composition, however, on a stator which is bound with a resin based sealer/binder shouldn't be touched with anything but compressed air in a controlled fashion.... Those cleaners are capable of more that you might hope for... just MHO.... tj...

good to know I am thinkin I am going to replace the stator. Last night I was out with a 00' srx and when we were side by side idling my lights were really dim, with no warmers turned on headlight on low and low beam. The srx everything on and good bright lights. so it's on the list for the summer! I do however wonder if it could be creating a performance problem even at hight rpm.

change the headlight condensor.first .. ...blue try one off your srx there are 2 on the dual models , plug ins are all the same ...

I think people clean the flywheel... there is recent post on here about bead blasting the flywheel with good results.

harness.not really sure if my headlights are dim or not.I don't night ride with it,not this year yet.Besides..I have that Blue lense cover over the light that I got from you..really couldn't tell even in daytime. All I know is when I look at it..it is like 2 blue eyes stirring back at me...lol
Do you have a heated shield.
I have had my cord short out twice now right where is plugs into the helmet.
Lights were really dim, unplugged my shield everything was fine. Plugged it back in lights were really dim again. You get the idea, dim light could be from a short anywhere. And my sled was also running worse. Switching from lo beams to hi would cause a stumble or miss.
Just another idea.

Ya I appreciate the idea, I do have a heated visor and will try riding without it for a bit. When I wired it in I wired it in the heated grip circuit so when I turn the grips off it is off as well. I have noticed that if the machine is at an idle evry time I either turn off the grips or just unplug my helmet the light flickers, but even still with grips off helmet unpluged and headlight on low beam the headlight and dash lights are really dim. I do like the idea of blasting the flywheel I will give it a try maybee. I will also try the condensor in the headlight.
I just replaced a stator for a customer with a viper. I can replace the stator, and clean the flywheel for you 700 for about $400. I'm not too far from you either, near Stratford.

sTATOR'S ARE BUILT WITH 2 SEPERATE PHAZED WINDINGS AS I UNDERSTAND , U CAN CLEAN ALL U WANT IF INTERNAL STRANDS ARE BEGGINING TO COME APART NOT VISUAL TO THE EYE ....CLEANING WONT DO S**** ... IT WILL BE MONEY SPENT FOR NOTHING ...THAT U COULD HAVE SPENT TOWARDS A GOOD USED ONES , I SEE THEM GO ANYWHERE FROM $100 TO $300 ON THIS SITE ....TRY THE CONDENSOR FIRST ,.....
$300 for a used one????!!! HOSE JOB!!! I just paid $260 for one incl taxes directly from Yamaha.

ya thanks for the help guys I think I will replace stator and clean flywheel. I agree with harness racer I was also under the impression the windings would go bad eventually. I can see how blasting the flywheel will help tho. There would likely be a little surface rust and build-up on the inner surface possibly causing a little trouble. I will probably just get a new stator as well.

I appreciate the offer but I should be able to tackle it, I can't see too many issues that may arise. I have the pullers and tools needed already.dwarf717 said:I just replaced a stator for a customer with a viper. I can replace the stator, and clean the flywheel for you 700 for about $400. Back in the day when parts we're harder to find, when there was no internet yet. My uncles use to apply clear nail pollish to the stator, when it starts dimming the lights or not working. Always worked. Just sharing my thoughts.
