I found a 99 SRX 700 that has a bad crank according to local dealer. Owner was riding in deep powder with it and the clutch blew apart. The dealer told him the crank was bad and the sled is junk. Evidently the guy has no garage and just wants to unload it.

It had a new track installed around 2 weeks before breaking. He wants $600.00 for it.

What do you think? Should I buy it and part it, or try and find a new crank, etc. and fix it?

Well, we got it for $600.00. Man this thing is in great shape. No cosmetic damage, new track, new studs and only 3000 miles. No seat tears, nos scratches, ohlins, all stock. He even threw in 3 brand new drive belts!

He was riding in deep powder, which the dealer told him you can't do with a Bender clutch, and the whole primary sheeve blew apart. He took it to be fixed and the dealer told him the crank was bent. My problem is, how can they diagnose this? They did not take the cases apart, it still runs, has great compression and pulls over fine. We held a screw driver against the crank and it doesn't seem to be moving at all. We have a spare clutch and are thinking of just putting it back together and running it.

Top end is fine as well. No piston or ring damage.

Is there any way to check if the crank is bent?

well if it runs and you get get a wicked vibration in the handle bars thats one way to spot a bad crank. If clutch blew he probably over revved it and spun a rod or main bearing.

you should be able to check the run off at the crank where the clutch was with a dail indicator. i would think you should be able to check the other end as well but i have never done that side.

nice sled for the money ;)!

Yes, I could definately use a dial indicator. I held a screw driver there the best I could and didn't see anything.

if the crank run off is within spec( i think 1-3 thousands is acceptable, i do not have my shop manual with me, i'm sure someone will jump in) then i would do as you said and run it.

have fun ;)!

I don't think you can see that like that, you have to use a dial indicator. We're talking of thousands of a inch of rounout...

you need to check the run out use a dial indicator if it is more .03 it will have to be fixed or you will run into big problem which will cost you a lot of $ you will not see this with the naked eye have to use dial indicator if you do not know how to do this i can tell you just send me your # good luck

to me i didnt see any movement but video was not real clear i think you got a good deal, but still check with inicator. i think dealer was trying to make money. if darv is correct on .03 for spec you are good to go thats almost a thirtysecond of an inch. if you dont do it all the time it would be hard to see, .003 run out thats .0015 on a side, but check the straight portion were the tapper begins

We didn't use the dial, and as for the video, i looked right at the end of the primary and saw absolutely no movement. We will check the crank with the dial indicator though. The clutch we put on is off a viper and not really sure how it will work for the srx.

As for the dealer, we have been hearing some really shady things about them. The previous owner o the sled acted like they called him the same day he took the sled in and said it was junk! I can't believe he didn't get a second opinion or something, but we wern't going to talk him into it. The new track and various other parts are worth the $600.00 and much more alone!

Bring your center cyc up to top dead then mesure the out side two see if its the same spec

I'm guessing a typo above. Probably should be .003" not .030". I've never seen a crank run-out spec that generous. You might see .030" with the naked eye but a dial indicator is required to see .003".

so check forgot to add another 0 if run out is under .03mm (0.0012in) you are ok if it more yo need to look at it.
