Looking at picking up an o4 Viper for the wife. Seller says engine is blown. These are his words:

"I was trying to get it running for the first time after summer storage. after it started it would not run at idle or low rpm's. after trying a few different things like new plugs, ck air box, ck plug wires, ect.. the last time I went to start it I pulled it over and it had a large backfire and that was it. It will not turn over now. I brought it to a sled shop and he seemed to think it was the crank."

Does this sound to be a typical problem and if so, what would you estimate the cost to get this thing running again? He says the sled has low miles.

Thanks

base will be from 450-550 for a crank. If it has not been torn down, it might not even need that. Might have had a nest in the air box and sucked it through into the cylinder and bound up. let me know if you dont buy it, I might be interested. well, I am deffinately interested, you know me.

The same thing happened to my friends 800 rev this year he tried to start after summer storrage and it backfired then he could not turn it over after that so he started to take the airbox apart and found a nest in the air box took the carbs off cleaned them up and away he went.

similar to what happened to my SRX. the cylinder leaked coolant and hydrolocked when I tried to start it, bending a conecting rod.

What was your ballpark cost to re-build?

I GOT TO TELL YA I DOUBT ITS THE CRANK. WHEN A SNOWMOBILE BACKFIRES ITS USUALLY A FUEL ISSUE CAUSED BY CARBS BEING OUT OF SYN, OR STUCK NEEDLE/ FLOATS DRIPING FUEL INTO CRANK CASE. I WOULD LOOK FARTHER. 3:16 (yammie tony)

if it does end up having a crank issue i just had mine done at therriault performance in greene, maine. new center rod, rod bearing, crank bearing, and the crank section the center rod is on. $400 out the door

Yep. Flooded with fuel, anti freeeze, water, etc and we all know liquids dont compress. Have dealt with a few bent rods and shattered lower rod bearings due to all of the above. Most likely though the isolated cylinder/rod will be damaged and the cost of fixing isnt to bad. The cost of tearing down and reassembly can be pricey though...

Ya, kind of bummed. Called the guy yesterday 3 hours before I was going in for back surgery. He said he'd get me some photos today. Got back from hospital and emailed him. He already agreed to sell it to someone else without even getting back to me first. Doesn't even have a deposit from what I understand. I offered full price and I would deposit to paypal but he denied.

oh well

Ya, never really made a deal, but when someone tells you they will get back to you with info and just blows it off and agrees to sell to someone is just poor. He had my number. A simple call and I would have said I'll take it.

Kind of hope the guy coming to buy it doesn't show. Like I said, I offered to give him the money immediately through paypal. Silly
