Well took the engine out today and popped the head off and noticed the middle cylinder was pretty chewed up,tore it down further and removed all three jugs the outer two cyliders were ok but looks like the center spun on the crankshaft top of piston was a little chewed up but the connecting rod looked like it git really hot and the bearing on the connecting rod was gone,im in between a rock and a hard place right now i just finished putting about three hundred dollars into the sled and im sure its going to cost at least another five to six hundred maybee if the crasnk is ok ,just cant figure out why the center piston got so hot might just part the thing out or look for a used viper or srx engine anyway willkeep you posted .

crank ain't ok, if rod bearing is gone. looking at approx $400 to fix rod bearing. you'll have a good $800 into rebuild. maybe even a $1000.

this is normal on most of the viper burn downs from what i have read on here. brothers 02 viper did the mag side connecting rod bearing the same way. just found a used crank for his recently. 00-02 sr5x crank works as well. you could try cvtec but make shure you tell them you want ALL your parts back if they cannot fix your crank. as we had toasted mag, they sent us all of his but the centre cyl section back and we had no luck with them at all in any sort of resoultion. check for a crank shop locally or in province 1st if you can.

remember even when jetted differently the center one gets real hot

my .02 is just find a complete engine from a crashed sled... mayber an SRX engine for a replacement ;)!

I haven`t tore it down to the crank yet but would like to find a used motor for a decent price like i said in a previous thread dont know if i want to dump any more money into the sled the season almost over so might just make a decision when the season is over.

well i will warn you right now that the rotating assembly from yamaha canada it is $2000.00 + tax. we put a used 01 srx motor in his for $1200.00. all the electronics, pull cord and power valves bolt right on. we got lucky and found one with viper cyls on it but i would recommend using your cyls and head to keep the plumbing simple for the coolant and exh. clutching remained the same strangely.

I had the same thing, and just went and found a good used low mileage engine out of an '04 viper. My personal opinion is that was the best option.

used motor

I'm having trouble finding a good used motor for a viper, any leads?

That really sucks.. I was in a similar situation almost 2 years ago. you best bet is going to be finding a motor, If you have damage to the top end and crank with a bearing that went out, chances are that there is catastrophic damage everywhere.

The good thing is you can sell the other 2 cylinders, head, and cases if there is no damage to help offset the cost of your new motor. How do the power valves look?

OR, might be able to make a deal with viperking on his bottom end and find another cylinder to rebuild your top end. Might be the cheapest way to go.

Have bought from him before. Very good man to deal with.

had the same thing happen last yeat to the pto side, got lucky cuz it was somewhat contained to that cylinder, had the crank pressed apart and all the bearings checked then retrued and rewelded, i found a nice cylinder and piston on here, a set of new rings for all, reeds (cracked one may have caused failure) and a gasket kit, around 800 bucks, it can be done somewhat cheaply considering what ur dealing with...then you know what you have over a used bottom end....i cranked up the oil pump adjustment as well so i know im getting plenty of oil at all times, just my experience
