LIFE MEMBER ONLY ONCE!!!
Last weekend took the sx600r out to warm up before the nephew came by.Because I hardly ride the 600 anymore..just the SRX..I noticed a bad noise coming from the motor area.It was like a rattling sound after engagement.I am thinking could it be pistons banging around inside..sounded that way.
Anyways he rode the sled last weekend and all is well.I took it out yesturday and the sound is still there.Really starting to bug me now.Maybe bearing going or bearing being tossed around inside motor. That is how persistant it is.
Now this morning was determined to find the problem.Didn't want to go for a ride and blow motor.
Tried reving up on a stand and noise was there after the clutches engage. So checked clutches..good.Checked jackshaft behind secondary..good.WTF!!!
Couldn't be exhaust with a sound like that.Stuck my head right in the engine area and that sound was scary..like something bouncing around in the motor.
So I thought maybe chain is loose or gear got loose. So proceded to take chain case cover off.Chain was good and gears intact.Checked the drive and jackshaft ends and no play whatsoever...
So then I proceded to start up motor and engage the clutches..all of a sudden the noise goes away..not even there. So know I am in a process of elimination..so know it may be driveshaft area to look at..but what..everything is tight.
After thinking more.I decided to rotate track by hand and I hear this banging sound..like tin hitting something..or metal loose somewhere..hmmmmmm

NO it is not a stone nor a skunk...lol This proves one thing..when you hear a noise that wasn't there before or that is not a normal noise to have..you should always envestigate it and find out something is not right.

Something was rattling under there.Stuck my hand around the driveshaft and shook things..everything solid.Checked drive bearing and it is intact.Checked driver wheels and all good. Then stuck my hand against the exchanger and found one of my protectors is wiggling. So I grab it,because of the skidplate under belly, protector was wedged between that and bellypan. So I figured a rivet or 2 must of broke.I grabbed the protector and it then moved and slid out to the left of track and out.HOLY SH*T..this thing was loose and waiting to perhaps take a turn for the worse and jamb my track probably..would of thrown me over the bars, would of torn the track down the line and or smashed up against the echanger and thrashed that. But this was the sound of metal banging when track engaged.Track was thrown against it and making it rattle against the exchanger and thus transferring the noise above and causing me to panic.Glad I found this sooner then later..sled could of be wriiten off and the person(my nephew) could of be injured going at 80 mph when this thing decided to turn and jamb up things.
NOTE:When a sound persists that really bugs you..you have to go in and try to find the source. It only cost me 1.5 hours of my time and some gear oil..which was pretty cheap. You newbies got to learn to listen and conquer yoursrelf.Because if most would trailer the sled to their dealers and dealer would have gone through everything before they found this,,the bill could be up to $500 or more..Easy money for them.

Well I am glad you figured it out before it was to late. That would have sucked a big one if it came out ruined the track heat exchanger etc.

just be glad it wasn't something worse! my arctic cat has had a wierd rattling sound, didn't think much of it, maybe a bushing in the clutch... until the motor started running like crap and I had zero PSI in one cylinder. One of the rings broke and was bouncing around inside the cylinder, punching all kinds of holes into the piston/cylinder/head.

I was thinking that could of been a possibility..but figured motor would of blown last weekend of riding.Motor is still running great with nearly 13,000 km's on board.Starts in 1 pull usually on a have decent day.Compression #'s are still high...what can I say..but to just ride ride ride...jump jump jump...

Good to hear you found it. I learned that if there is a new noise I check it out every time
That is how all the fun begins.
