My wifes XT500 has about 11,500 km on it and I was thinking that it's about time to replace the drive chain and gears. Any opinions on this, when have you replaced them on high mile sleds?

Just take the chain out & look for broken or weak links. Check the condition of the gears. Lower hp sleds tend to be a lot easier on drive train components.

Turk,
Do you have the chain stretch spec for this sled, I don't have the service manual for it.
I purchased the sled with about 4K on it. The chain case had never been serviced by the previous owner, the chain was very loose and the gear lube was black.
I've serviced it yearly for the past 4 seasons. The top gear has visible wear grooves, and the chain is always fairly loose when I service it. I was thinking that changing it might be cheap insurance?
Thanks!
