Hey fellas I just split my case to send the top half out for some work. My question is how do I go about cleaning the lower half and crank inside and out? Can I just use the parts washer or will that hurt something? I wanna do this right the first time so hopefully I don't ever have to go back in. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I'm a first timer on the motor teardown. Thanx

I'll just "borrow" the wife's for that.
I really do hope see notices that.... Just don't want any harsh chemicals to eat at the aluminum......

I am in the process of rebuilding the engine on my 2000 SRX. For the crank, I am spraying on clean solvent such as paint thinner or brake cleaner and using a new parts cleaning brush. I would not clean the crank in a parts cleaner since you run the risk of getting some abrasive crud in the needle bearings. You could end up doing much more harm than good if you clean the crank with dirty solvent. After the crank is clean, blow it off with compressed air followed by a liberal coating of 2 cycle oil. Then wrap it in a plastic bag untile you are ready to install it.
I masked of all the critical surfaces with a platic tape the glass bead blasted the upper and lower crankcase halves. If you use this option be sure you are using GLASS beads since they will not remove aluminum, they will only clean the surface. After glass beading, clean the crankcase halve in hot soap and water, thorough water rinse and blow dry with compressed air.

Sounds good. I was thinkin the parts washer might be a little too dirty for the crankbearings so I was gonna use brake cleaner too. Thanks a lot for the info. This is my first tear down and so far it's goin pretty well. Everything came apart great and I'm sending out the top half of the case and cylinders, pistons and heads for work in a month or so and would like to have the crank and case lower all cleaned up so I can put the old girl back together when my stuff comes in.

The keys for a good rebuild is to take your time, labele every part as you disassemble the engine, key every part as key as you can get it and measure the various clearances/tolerances on the parts. Don't take chances on marginal parts and use only OEM parts for the rebuild.

As for clearances and tolerances, I am sending my parts to Don and I am sure he will check everything for me. I am changing the 4 sliding rings(?) on the crank and the 2 seals also. I tried to keep a clear head during tear down so I could be as thorough (spelling?) as possible. Thanks for the help Jim.
