hey all,
just hoped aboard the yammie club...just bought a mint 02 viper 700 with 3800miles and e-start and reverse...100% stock except a sno stuff can...
was looking for a trail only machine, and wanted it to be a triple! i have never owned a trail sled before...only mtn sleds...modded out 07 rev 800r 144, 02 rmk 800 144, 05 IQ racer with 800 slp engine and 136...and now my current mtn sled...tricked out 09 M8 sno pro LE 162 turbo... and and i always loved the look and sound of the vipe, plus they are way more reliable than the doo triples...
i love having a trail sled so i can rack up the miles on the trails, but i have a few concerns about the vipe...
- seat is really low and brutally uncomfortable (used to a boss on my cat!)
- bars are low but comfortable for the trail...
- clutching seems off due to revving 8800rpm wide open and only 100mph on a packed trail (thats on the dream-o-meter too!) whos kit works best or anyone have a setup for 2000ft?
- sled needs at least 1.25 track (how much slower will it be if i went 1.5"? need to keep the speed as i ride with guys on apex's)
- this thing rides so rough going slow i had to actually let the springs go to see if the shocks were seized...(thinging fox floats on front with doo skid in the rear)
- would like to go 136 when i upgrade the track, but will i lose too much speed...pretty slow for a 700 as is...
- should i ditch the sno-stuff can? i know those cheap silencers lose hp most of the time...whats a silencer that dosent?
sorry for all the questions, but would like to get the sled set up so i can enjoy the vipe to the fullest!
thanks again...any setup or tuning info help would be great as well
i did a complete service on the sled after i bought it, and everthing looks in absolutly mint shape...thing was a garage queen cream puff!

welcome to the club
seat- buy a boss as soon as a new run comes out. don't hesitate they sell out fast
bars- you can run up to a 3" riser without changing cables
clutching- look at the tech section for tons of clutch setups, or do a search here
track- need to change drivers to go much bigger, which changes gearing
i've got a sc10III in my srx great mod
can- stock first, bender second in my opinion
i'll post a good link for the sc10III install as soon as i find it

thanks alot stagg,
a 3" rox riser and boss highrise would defenatly fit the bill for ergos!
i swore i was going to keep this sled stockish because i went so wild with my m8...but it looks like i am heading down that road yet again!!!
haha, but thats what its all about...good times
can see this sled stayin in my garage for avery long time...shed has so much soul and character than the new sleds...feels like a late 60s muscle car compared to the new sleds! lol

Make sure the exhaust valves are working good.
Make sure you know what the inside looks like too.
Sometimes looking good on the outside masks issues on the inside.
Triple pipes really wake these things up.
A mono skid is excellent for the trail.
Other skids including the SC10-III work quite well also.
Quite honestly though for a pure trail sled, spend enough time on a well setup Apex or Attak. Once you get over the learning curve of these 4-strokes you will really love them on the trail. The shocks can be tuned to make these sleds realy ride great without changing the skids. Setup correctly, you can put the miles on easier than any other sled. Tuned well they get to 100 quickly.

the 4 stroke was my first choice, but i only wanted to spend 3500and get the most reliable trail sled with enough power to keep me occupied...so far i like the vipe...i knew the guy who ownd it personally...he was my boss and had ocd...he is a mechanical engineer looking after us diesel techs....its a good thing for me...lol
just need some mods now
- mpi transfer improvement kit
- bender clutching and can (ditching the rumblepack)
- 1.25 or 1.5" ripsaw (not decided on on the 136 yet, dont want to lose top speed)
- blue low yamaha windsheild and white yamaha skid plate, and a set of C&A skis cause the stockers push brutal on soft snow trails....
anything else ofr basic mods?> it has the rear cooler as well....

hey, i also have a low blue windshield for $40 and a 2 in powermadd riser for $30, i also have a skid that had an mpi transfer enhancement kit in it, the skid was damaged though and i don't if everything for the kit is there or not, let me know what all your interested in, i also have a white skidplate i might let go of for the right price
hey king i pm'd you again...
also, is it normal to hear the chaincase when your crusing under no load...like cruising on the trail?
when the sled is under power it dosent make any noise,as soon as i let off i hear it again...
adjusted the chain and no difference...no shavings on the magnet
is it just the sound of the chain sliding on the adjustment slider or think its a bad bearing? or this a normal viper thing?

You bet, on a reverse sled there is a bit of noise.ViperGYTR said:hey king i pm'd you again...

Arrow skis, ohlins or pioneer revalves all around and tighten up the skid. Venture sway bar, Boss seat for sure, they look like crap but make the skid work great. Run the stok pipe or covert to srx pipes if your up for some work. Send cylinders to Don Pizor and have head recut or use srx heads with water rail. Install a srx torque arm NOW! The front motor mount wont live without it. With a boss seat, you will want a low windshield and a riser that rolls ahead. Mountain max cables are longer if you want more than three inches or if you change to wider bars.
Change the bearing in the drive shaft out for a new one and repack it every spring(no grease fitting)

thanks for the awesome tips,
just gonn a use a 3" riser no other mods...
gonna add them to my list
is the srx mount the same as the $40 yamaha brace kit?
how much hp for the srx heads? will i have to jet?
best to use the opti-cool head gasket wit the srx heads?
for best trail power would don's porting and srx heads with stock exhaust be best?
i just know i liked the formula 3 800 better on trails than the mach z...the single was torque laden!
sorry for being so ignorant when it comes to yamaha's but am a newbie!
thanks again, all your help is greatly appreated...hope to get the sled set up for next year!

I went all out on mine. Triple pipes, SLP head job Fox FLOATS M-10 in the rear, bar riser, etc. I absolutely LOVE my Viper. I have 136 plans for the last 2 years and have had the parts to do it for a year. The next thing to get done to it is definatellt going to be a seat riser or a BOSS seat if I can find one. Since riding season is over, the FIRST thing I would do is pull the wiring harness out of the sled and check it for rub through issues starting. This is a common Viper problem. Especially check where the handlebar harness runs through the dash and under the engine. I replaced triple wrapped and rerouted mine.

Putting SRX heads on is basically to add more cooling for the pistons when running tripple pipes. The Viper head wasn't designed for the hp produced by tripple pipes (25-33hp gain).... not sure if the srx heads alone would add much hp.
