hey fellas...i was starting my sled today 99 srx 700 and the knot must have come undone from the starter handle and the rope recoiled back into the starter with the handle still in my hand. before i go ahead and try to retreive the rope I could use some helpful advice to make this job a bit faster and smoother. I'm assuming I already have to pull the pipes off too......any other input would be appreciated

-remove pipes + canister
-unbolt and remove the short piece of bulkhead that goes over top of the recoil
-remove all recoil bolts[theres one hiding on the bottom thats easy to miss]
-remove recoil but don't take it appart!
-fish the end of the rope out and put a bow in it
-using the notch in the recoil pully rewrap the spring
-inspect the rope...if its ok reinstall

I read a lot online about people saying you had to loosen the motor mounts to get at the bottom bolt out.

You don't need to loosen the mounts to get the recoil off. It took so fandangling but with a long slim 10mil socket and an extension i was able to get it off.

You will probably have to re-tension the line, in which case you will have to take the recoil apart. I would re-wrap it anyway. I just had to replace my rope a few months back so most of this should still be fresh in memory... :)

After you get the recoil out, go ahead and take the center bolt out of the recoil plate. Take a mental picture of the cam bracket as it needs to go back in the same position.

Before you lift the recoil plate out turn it a number of times clockwise. The idea is to get the spring hook off the recoil spring. you DO NOT want to pull the recoil spring out of the housing, it is a PIA to get back in. Gently lift the plate up, if you feel any tension set it back down and spin it clockwise some more. Once you can get the plate lifted out without taking the spring with it, unravel and re-wrap the pull rope. This is also a good time to lay some grease down on the recoil spring.

There is a rope slot in the plate, put the end of the rope through the plate. Set the plate back down into the recoil housing with the spring catch just behind the recoil spring hook. Press down and turn a bit counter clockwise. The spring should catch the spring grab. You'll feel the tension on the plate. Once grabbed install the center bolt, bolt spring and cam.

Preload the spring by rotating the plate 4 1/2 times counter clockwise. Feed the end of the rope through the housing and knot. Re-install recoil.

After re-installing the recoil feed the recoil rope through the guides and out of the panel and knot it through the handle. Make sure you have a washer between the knot and plastic handle, otherwise it will just slip through again.
