New rear skid shocks.

I'm looking at a set of rear ohlin shocks from a fellow ty member. They are out of a 2003 rx-1 . I want to put them in a o4 viper s, will they fit? The part #'s at ohlin dont match but that doesnt mean they will or wont fit. I'm thinking the skids were the same but just not sure. Any help would be great. Thanks CCC
 

what's the part number on your large shock ? is it a clicker? i have a ohlins shock in my skid and it fits fine. something like 18 1/2 inches eye to eye. i'll measure mine if you need the exact measurements! :2strokes:
 
tHEY WILL FIT BUT YOU WILL NEED TO GET THEM revalved - RX-1 carries a lot more weight in the back of the sled.
 
If you get the YA numbers off the shocks (stamped on one end) I can get you the specs. I ran the RX-1 Ohlins rears in a Viper for a few years. They worked quite well. You might be surprised to know that the Viper setup from Ohlins was a little stiffer than the RX-1 setup. I will look for my notes on this. I think I even have the spec sheet from the Ohlins rep somewhere on this computer.

It looks like the YA 331 & YA 642 are a heavy-duty version of the YA 351 & YA 352.
Although the spring rates on the RX-1 are heavier, the valving on the Viper setup is stiffer. The Viper shocks (especially the center) are heavier duty.

The Ohlins Rep said this was due to expected usage of the 2 models. The Viper was a "big bump" sled, and the RX-1 was a trail sled.

I found that the RX-1 shocks on the Viper worked very well. If I stayed hard into big bumps they tended to fade after a while, but were way better than the stock shocks.

I do have a spreadsheet of all Ohlins springs, but I do not have much info on valving. The www.ohlinsusa.com site is not as good as it used to be for non-current products.
 
I do have the YA331 spring specs somewhere, but can't find them at the moment. If someone has the spring part number I can look it up. The YA331 is a better shock than the YA351. It has a remote reservoir.

Heres the link to the exact shocks im looking at with pic's. Thanks for all the input guys. I need new shocks as the 04 viper s did not have the rebuildable ones in the rear. Couldnt decide between new skid, or just some new shocks for the original skid. I'm leaning twoard just new shocks. Also if i decide to stretch to 136 these should still work. I do know i will revalve them if i buy them for my weight and riding style. Thanks again. CCC
 
i would think there is a little diffrence in the springrate and also valving but would not be a huge diffrence, i would not be a bit affraid of running them. anyone at a shop that does rebuilding could tell you the diffrences, its not that bad expensive to have bruce at pioneer performance rebuild em, tell em your weight and what type of riding you do and he will revalve it and spring it to you anyways, but if you do that then it will be more expensive, valving aint bad but springs cost a bit. i think springs are like $100 if you need one.
 
If i were you, I'd seriously look into a different skid... I installed an SC10III in an srx and an SC10IV in a venture... The ride is going to be much better than any well setup pro action skid... You can find a whole skid about the same price as those shocks alone,,, with a lot less maintenance on skid issues,,, (bushings, w-arm, ect...) JM experience......

X2 on the different skid, the difference is incredible if you move to one of the newer skids, whereas with the shocks even valved properly it is only a moderate improvement. There are a number of new skids that work well. Choose the one that fits what you plan to do with the sled. Usually can find these skids for under $500 in great shape.
 
On the flip side (and no disrespect to the skid swapping folks!), installing Ohlins on the Pro Action is NIGHT AND DAY better than stock.....


I procured RX1 Ohlins (Rear with remote reservior), had them resprung / revalved from Carvers, and I love them. Would never go back. In the top 3 mods done to my Mnt Viper........

Now keep in mind my application is a 144" Pro Action skid, which i've heard always rode better than the shorty.
