Pull the skid, and make sure you get the same year rail to replace... Yamaha changed the rail in 00 I believe and it will not work with the older rail on the other side, unless you wanted to replace both and one of the front w-arm mounts as well.
the skid should be pulled every season to look for cracks the 97 sx 600/700 had problems with cracks if the are ridin hard,but i never saw something like that he may have hit a rock or something very hard to crack it there.

that happened to me last year too. It seems to happen a lot on most of yamaha's low travel suspension sleds. I took it out and replaced.
