Hey guys, I'm sure there has been lots of questions on this here, but I thought I'd start new thread.

Should I set the carbs up prior to tuning the clutch?
I guess this makes sense but not sure exactly.

ALSO, I'm reading Olav Aaens clutch tuning manual and find it really interesting. It says that I need to know my engines power curve (to see where peak power is on the tach) prior to tuning the clutch.
How or where do I go to find out where peak power is on the engine?
I just had it rebuilt - 98 SRX 700 with 500miles on the new rebuild - 140 x 3 across the cylinders.
Gonna play with the carbs next I guess - what's recommended for aggressive trail/lake driving - not going to be a 1/4 mile dragger.

Yes, you want your carbs in top shape for a proper running engine. Make sure your jetting is set up correctly for any modifications to your engine. Stock jettings are in the tech section.. You will need to see what your engine is turning for rpms with the clutching you have now, before you can tune it for optimal performance.. Do you know if it is stock or not? You are gonna want your rpms around 8,400....

Yes, the engine is stock, and I'm going to leave it that way, just want to play with the carbs and clutches.
What about the power curve?

Stock 1998 700 SRX:
-you want to rev your sled[full throttle shift out] at no more the 8400 RPM and no less then 8300RPM...8350 is perfect.

Not much you can do for the carbs,, beside make sure they are clean and all circuits are clear... And make sure they are jetted correct for temperature and or altitude.....(in tech section).... Your max horsepower is made around 8,350 - 8,500 rpm for the 98.. that is what you have to clutch for.. using stock weights may have to add some to middle and outer holes to bring engine speed to where it needs to be at wot.....

I've already switched the spring and weights to the stock 00-02 clutch - ie: new ywy spring and 8DN-20 weights. I guess I'll wait and see what happens.
If there isn't much to do with setting up the carbs, then why does each year have a different set of jets and pilots in it?
Which year has the best set of jets and pilots for aggressive trail / lake running in Huntsville Ontario?

98-99 model years had different porting and head specs. compared to the 00-02 years. Hence different jetting.. 01 is set up a little fatter on the mains then the 00, went back to 00 jets on the 02 because of the addition of dcs..(detonation control)..

Thanks for all the comments guys, I've just finished with the clutch, now gotta clean it and fit the new belt. changed the chain case oil, and did some spit and polish...now gonna pull the carbs....stand by for lift off!
