From what I have read here, Yamaha came out with a stronger steering shaft to replace the earlier ones that were breaking. Was it changed in production at some point and if so, does anyone know when?
I want to do something with mine to prevent it breaking, and am contemplating getting a new or used one, or reinforcing my original one. If I buy used, I will need to know when the heavier ones began in production.
It is a 1997. The current part number is 8CR-23813
I understand that they broke near the bottom of the shaft?

2000 and up were reportedly stronger. the break point typically was at the top, just below where the bars mounted. easy to reinforce by simply adding an insert tube and a few welds by drilling and spotting. have done several. never had one break at the bottom, always up high, but thats just me.
