I have a '99 SX600 and would like to have reverse on it but, I don't want to use the mechanical system Yamaha came up with. Does anyone know of an electronic system, like Ski Doo's, that works on Yamaha 2-stroke Red Heads?

the skidoos stop the motor and start it back up in the opposite direction ..i beleve i read this question before and i dont think it can be done ....but i did see a yamaha electric reverse on a apex i belive i was wondering if it could be put on a srx

Apex = 4-stroke; SRX = 2-stroke so I am thinking that it will not work.
Does the CDI on a Ski-Doo have a program in it that causes the misfire that makes the engine spin backwards? If so, has anyone ever tried it on a Yamaha 2-stroke to see if it works?
Anyone know how the electronis system on a Ski-Doo works?

anyone have any more comments on this?
I am wondering if Ski-Doo has the electronic reverse hard coded into the CDI and if swapping out the CDI for a Ski-Doo CDI (with the reverse button from ski-doo) will work on my '99 SX. I am sure that the two CDI's don't have the same timing curves but, if they are close I am wondering if it would work.

skidoo has mapping in the cdi that changes timing and some other things and causes the motor to die and re-start backwards.
I have had three doos with it, and i dont see any advantage besides weight savings. Alot of the time the sleds die and dont restart or it just plain takes to dam long..

Arctic Cat did this way back in the 70's. Turn the knob and it retarted the spark so much that it spun the motor backwards. However, if I am thinking correctly - back then you had to kill the motor first, then completly restart it. Then repeat to drive forward again

I thought there were some changes to the secondary/driven too. I thought they used a sprag to limit the opening of the secondary to govern reverse speeds. My Doo buddies love it. Especially the retired ones.

The skidoo systems kills the spark until the engine almost stops and then fires the other side of TDC so it restarts backwards. The secondary needs to have reverse ramps because the entire drivetrain runs in reverse including the engine. I have more tech info on the system, but it would be fairly difficult to build one for a redhead. Of course with enough will and money anything can be done.
