any advice??? 2000 sxr 700, I never had studs before.. previous owner had dealer install 144 studs last winter, V pattern up the center then studded outside. Im alittle concerned on the outside studs as i dont want to kill the life of the track, anything to avoid? is it bad news having the outside studded? i just dont want to be replacing a track in the next year or two.... oh, they were woodys studs that the dealer installed

It is not necessarily a bad thing that the outside is studded. Yes the track may wear a little faster because of it but not by that much. The thing that you will really notice with an SXR600/700 sled with the outside studded vs a sled with only the inside studded is the turning ability and how you have to set up the chasis to make them turn. The sled that has the outside of the track studded is going to turn harder and take a different setup to get it to turn well. I have first hand experiance with this in that I studded my SXR inside and out and didn't like how it turned. Once I took the studs out of the outside of the track I got the traction I wanted without sacificing how it turned. These sleds respond well to having just the inside of the track studded with 96 studs. Heck you can get rid of the rotating mass of 50 studs to and all the HP and accel/deccel associated with it.

I would remove all the outside studs and installe them with double backers next to opposing inside studs. The only way outside studs last well is if every bar has a stud. with the pattern you have, when your track spins or drags and it is on its edge, you are putting your braking or acceleration loads through only 3-4 studs depending on patern. inside patern is safer for the track, if your going with outside paterns which hook up better, you need 168 outside patern or 192. Both of these work good

X2, I took all mine out on the outside and moved them to the inside. Put about a thousand miles on it last winter with no problems. CCC

how do you remove studs

how would I remove the outside studs? and wont this damage my track? what happens with the holes that it leaves after i pull them? and also, if i remove the outside ones and just stick those in a box, can i just go with what i already have in the center? i guess it depends on what i have in the center

I have 96 down the middle with a 1" hacksaw it I don't slip at all on take off. Will hang skiis on ice. (Disclaimer - I have a polaris Pro/X skid in it) The last track I had, the previous owner had studs on outside and thats where is ripped due to stud tearout. There is less structure out there to handle the excess force.

There were holes that were drilled(cut) into the track before the studs were installed, so if you remove the studs (with a socket and hex key wrench) all you will have left is about a 6mm hole which will not hurt the track as the rubber should have encapsulated the cord in the middle of the track at the time of manufacture. Also you shouldn't have to worry about the track being weak so to speak after removing the studs. And, if you want to you don't have to worry about the pattern down the middle you should have about 96 studs left after removing all of the studs on the outer edge. IF you are a VERY aggressive rider then I would reccomend more studs in the middle, but if you are a "normal" rider you should be fine, NOW, if decide to triple pipe the sled down the road I would reccomend adding more studs when your mods are done. Hope this clears some stuff up for you.
