air filters

lately ive been thinking about ditching that big stock air box and moving to something that would give me a little more performance..would anyone recommend installing 3 k&n air filters with the prechargers? and if i did would i have to do any jetting. thanks
 

Your not going to find performance in a trail sled, what your going to find is a spiratic,fussy engine that constantly is sensative to temp changes,youll get real good at changing jets,needle positions over the season of riding.

In my opinion, youd be making a mistake!
 
I recently designed a Unifilter K&N setup for the yammy triples that I will be testing this winter. I made all three carbs feed off the same filter to hopefully prevent the tuning issue and gain some performance overall. I will keep you updated on how everything goes. Here is an old picture of the setup with a couple minor changes that have been made to it since then.

I put 3 k&n filters on my viper before I ever found this forrum. I can say i have had no issues with them. But I would say I wouldnt do it again. the only differnce I noticed was more intake noise and a lighter wallet not worhth it in my opinion. And Mrvipers opinion is prolly correct I just dont notice any change in rideabilty myself. spend your dollars on other more proven upgrades.
 
All carbs like to pull air from around the outside (or lip) of the bell mouth. The bigger the bell mouth the better, shorter the better. Putting a hose or anything the same OD of the bell mouth for any length could hurt hp. Dyno would be the only way to know for sure.

Just send your cylinders out to MrViper if you want more performance, he worked on my Viper and it is a blast to ride now! Surprises quite a few SRX's and gives them Kitty's a good look at a blue sled!

I agree with this and have shortened the tubing pieces substantially since these pictures. The best thing that could be done for the design I have above is to make a nozzle out of the tubing to increase the air velocity going into the carbs. I will be doing some testing with this filter this year so I will keep you posted on the performance.

X2...I have been there!
The individual filters can benifit some older sleds and motorcycles that had very restrictive intakes but for most modern sleds/bikes ect... stick with the stock intakes for stock to mildely modded setups. I even run the stock intakes on my "massaged" Subaru.

this is what i do gut the air box leave it on as the sled likes 2 have cooler air from out side the engine department put ur selve a hotzman fuel temp compensator in the air box and thats the best mod u can do 2 ur sled for fuel isuues and runability for all weather conditions and mountain riding. jet it for a lean -20 and ur compensator will do the rest for year round riding. AL
