Next step for my 700sx

I have completed all the skid maintenance per Betheviper's write up and replaced some bearings and did general maintenance. Added the Ohlins to the front, transfer rods to the rear, ski alignment, suspension setup, installed new carbides, and studded the OEM track.

With all of that I am happy with how the machine handles from 40-100mph. It handles like a damn slot car. A few of my buddies can not believe how fast it is through the groomed trails even though they have much newer and "faster" sleds.

My question and goal is to get this thing to hook up at 0-40mph which is a huge problem with not only this 700 but everyone I have ever ridden. I am not against replacing the track, adding larger drivers, and adjusting gearing but want some actual feedback from owners or wrenches that have completed any modifications that have solved this problem. I would love to have more travel in the rear suspension but don't want to put $1,000 in a $1,700 machine.

Here is a list of my mods from memory:

144 studs, 8" carbides, maximum performance transfer rods, ohlins up front, new jetting per the tech pages,head gasket mod from tech pages, stock can drilled per the tech pages, yamaha OEM belt.

I would like to do a clutch kit this season also to help out.

Any help is much appreciated. :letitsnow And let the cats continue to follow the 700 triple.....
 
What type and length of stud did you go with? traction works best for down the middle only placement. I like to go with a 144 pattern down the middle and you should not have any issues. You set up your skid properly? limiter straps and all that?

If you want to flat out beat your buddies hands down, I would pick up a set of bender triples, re-jet the carbs per their specs, gear up ( I think the SX's were geared a tad short) and put a clutch kit in to do all that once you get traction resolved


You dont have to spend but a few hundred for all I mentioned lots of people selling stuff on here in classifieds and i bet a handful of them have pipes for you for fraction of the cost

I have 1" stud boy studs in their standard v pattern shown on their templates.

I'm looking for more hook up and unless every 97-03 vmax I have ever ridden was setup wrong these things lack in the traction department.

When we take off from a dead start the F7, ZRT 800, ZR900, T CAT 1000, Rev 600, Rev 800, and Rev 1000 show me their snow flaps for a long stretch. They all run way more aggressive tracks and stud patterns then I do.

I love the fact that mine runs straight and handles the tight turns like it is on rails. I just want some more traction down low. If there are some recommendations on a setup someone used I would appreciate it before just guessing or having the parts guy who rides a 2010 loaner shop sled guess.

I have the entire write ups printed out and have done all the things that are listed in Tighten up yours, Line up yours and Setup yours and it still lacks traction. I am going to pull the shocks to have them inspected and serviced if needed.

I would think that more guys would have had this same issue and solved it???

Is a 1" track or 1.25" adequate? Did someone do the swap and think man that was what I was missing all along? Just some actual I did this and it worked advice is all I am looking for.

I love this machine and I'm sure I am riding it at it's limits I just want to raise the bar this year for the Cat's and Doo's ;)!
 
Changing the track will definatly make a huge difference, in my experience putting a 1.25 ripsaw on my srx gave me better traction than the stock track with 192 picks, the stock track sucks big time. I loved the ripsaw but this year i am going to try the cobra on my 144 viper.A track change will amaze you.

Those stock 97 tracks were junk....I can't even believe someone still has one that is in one piece! I would get a new Camoplast Carve track in 1" (no bigger) and put 144 studs down the middle.

I have the 1" Carve with 144 studs down the middle on my sx700r. It's definately head and shoulders above the stock track. I also did Turks clutch/helix mods for trail.
 
1" track

Was there any mods needed to fit the 1" under there and did you use 1.25" studs?
 
if u want these sleds 2 hook up with out studs u have 2 remove ski pressure and u do that buy moving ur total suspention into the tunnel so ur hanger u drill a hole about 1 1/2 inch higher up then that moves ur track up into the tunnel and moves ur weight ahead taking some of the front weight and loading it 2 the track. i do this with my snow dragger as we are not allowed studs, this set up hooks real hard and i,d sooner do that then hang all those studs and extra weight plus u risk ripping ur tunnel out if u do any jumping my 2 cents
