Earlier Today I Noticed A Small Leak Of Coolant Coming From A Small Hole Located Behind The Water Pump On The Bottom Half Of The Crankcase.does Anyone Know Why This Hole Is There?is It Supposed To Be An Over Pressure Blow Off ? Would This Mean That My Water Pump Seal Is Gone?

kirk, the hole is there so that when the mechanical starts leaking the antifreeze does not get forced past the inner oil seal and in to the crankcase. it could mean your mech seal is going or if your lucky it could just be the seal on the bolt that holds the impeller on the shaft.

either way Kirk pull the motor out and take the pump apart...
I just heard out snow forcast, after the 24th 7 to 14 cm's coming.Cold winter ahead and a lot od snow forcast.I have to hurry up on my re-builds...

The mechanical seal is the one with the spring attached right? or is there one inside the crankcase on the other side of the impeller bearing? I bought the mountain srx from Burridge, the one that had crank troubles! I got a new crank for it and the engine is all put together now. When i installed it and poured coolant in it, I noticed the leak. So I hauled out the engine again and pulled the water pump apart and the seal with the spring was stuck inside the case. I removed it and replaced it with another one I had in the shed !It wasnt a new seal though!! Put it all back together again and added a little coolant and presurized the system and I can hear air and see coolant seaping out from that hole! What am I missing?

yup thats the mech seal ,but thats only half of it. the other half is the ceramic ring on the back side of the impeller. have a good look at both seal surfaces they have to be perfectly smooth also i've seen the ceramic ring crack so inspect very carfully ,if in doubt replace both parts. another thing is the ceramic part and the seal surface on the rubber part have to be PERFECTLY clean (no dust,no lint, not even a finger print or it will leak).
