Guys looking for some suggestions here. Have a line
@01 SXR, 4k on the clock, says motor redone last year(not sure what he means by that) asking $2400 or
1998 vmax 700, 3500 on the clock, has elec start no reverse guy is asking 1900.00
Finally, 1996 vmax 600 2 up, reverse, elec start warmers front and back has aboyt 1600 miles on it, this guy wants 2000.00
I realize these sleds have very different uses but im looking for something I can trail ride on and occasionally take my 7yr old son with(no hotrodding with him on board of course). Can you guys help me out with the asking prices here?
The SXR looks nice but im concerned that he had the motor redone at such a low mileage. Any thoughts? thanks. Joe

ur 98 vmax700 tripple is ur best bet . stay away from the 600 twin 2 hard on fuel , if ur double riding then ur 700 mountain max is better for that the srx really not made 2 double on. AL

Those 700 redheads run forever the only down side to buying the 98 is I think it will only have about 10in of travel while the sxr should have 12in. I think thats right I'm sure I will be corrected if I am not. Anyways that won't really be a problem if you are just trail riding on groomed trails. I would definitely find out why the sxr was "redone", then make a decision from there. I would probably pull the trigger on the 98 vmax just because then, no one has messed with it, and you have a better idea of what you are buying, then look for a used 2up seat to bolt on when your son rides. At the very least I will tell you not to buy that 600, fuel mileage and I believe they had a bad aluminum alloy in the pistons that allowed them to melt down easier, again not 100% sure just going off memory.

sxr
I'd go with the sxr ,it has better travel suspension, wider bars ,better seat ,and guages ,just ask why it was rebuilt, mine has 25000 kms on it and it was reringed at 18000 kms,the rest of the engine was like new .

Thansk guys...] Believe me I have done alot of reading here on all the yamaha sleds, I guess I was trying to figure what sled has the best VALUE for whats being offered.
I seriously entertained the idea of looking at the '96 vmax BUT that pogo front suspension......AND I was hoping to bring the guy down to reality 2k for a 96? I think he was about 700 to heavy, even with low miles.
I do agree with all of you above the 98 or the 01 are the best bet. Iam going to talk to the owner of the SXR and find out what went wrong with the motor so early.
AND im hoping to get him closer to 2000.00 maybe even 1900.00 I think 2400 is a little much.

@@Update@@
Just spoke to the owner of the SXR...he said at about 3000 miles the sled threw a pick into the heat exchanger which caused the obvious...He replaced one cylinder as well as all new gaskets etc..He said the tracks in 01 some had problems holding certain types of picks. And throwing one was not uncommon. He didnt seem to willing to come down on the 2400 price. I am hoping to go see/hear it this week.
Oh ya...no electric start or reverse.
Lastly he said it needs new hyfax probably after its second trip out. How much do these cost?
Thanks for all the advice keep it coming. Joe

He must have run it quite a while after the idiot light came on that it was overheating to take a cylinder out.

hyfax is like $12.00 for a pair of decent ones. you are making the right chioce with looking at the sxr 1st. if it looks too rough, pass on it and get the 98. can always upgrade it with stuff being sold by members on here.
+1 for the triple!!!
Don't buy the twin..... I made that mistake!!!!!
If it doesn't look clean, PASS!!!!
MY $1,200 twin is now a $3,000 TURD!!!! LOL

thanks for the suggestion. I am defiantly going for a 700. Just from what I read here its a no brainer. Good gas mileage, great reliability.
Im going to see the SXR tonight i will snap some pics and post up.
The guy says he was a yammie mechanic and has gone thru the sled every year before putting it up. Gonna see if I can get him to install new hyfax before I buy. Finger Crossed. Thanks for the input guys.
Just wish the sled had reverse, this 40 yr old back aint what it used to be.

Ok guys
went to check out the sled tonight looks good, but I noticed one thing: the heads were not red...at all. The were more dull black or grey. I thought the heads would be red. Am i missing something, or could the heat from the meltdown turned the color.

I have seen a burnt head on another red head like that but only parts were black and you could still see some red. This was caused from overheating as well.
Ok thanks for the confirmation. The owner showed me the piston and cylinder that he replaced. And actually the cylinder didnt look that bad. But the guy decided not to mess with it and just replaced it. As well as be seals in the case.
I just wonder whats this worth? He wants 2400.

So did you end up buying the SXR? By the way based on those pictures it looks to be in excellent shape!
