:o| cases went back together easy.BUT reading in a Clymer manual about the 3 C- rings that lock the bearings in place.Do they have to be positioned only to sit in 1 case half or split 50/50 into both case halves??? :o| :o|
Then read a little more..there is a right way and a wrong way to install the 2 end bearings on the shaft. When they lock into place the the 2 oil holes that extend through the bearing race into the braring rollers must line up with the 2 holes in the case in order to get oil.I didn't know that was an issue at the time, but if I flipped the bearing the wrong way the oil holes will miss the holes in the case.. #$%&* I could of lucked out but can't take that chance.
Who said this would be easy, nothing in the Yamaha manual stating the importance of these 2 situations. I am almost ready to park everything for now and basically give it up and maybe I won't even try the 600 re-build at all..at least have 1 sled running.I knew something was going to go bad here...think I am very depressed right now and will grab the Crown Royal and then go to sleep early tonight.Haven't lost my temper yet..but it is close... #$%&*

no one wants to chime in here.I went thru the manual page for page and noticed it does mention positioning of them retainer C clips.Funny never noticed anything like that when I pulled motor apart.

here is the motor opened up prior to taking the crank out from day one.I don't see any of them c-retainer clips sticking out off the bearings when I removed the bottom case. And now I see I got the clutch side bearing installed right today because it can only go on 1 way,has the groove for the c-clip on it.It is then the mag side end bearing that I may have put in wrong and have no proof of it unless I crack the case back open again and remove the damn crank again.....

have a cocktail. it's not snowing yet. just make sure she's done right, and let her buck for 10,000 more miles

Take a break from it.
This is why engine building is time consuming-check and re-check.
NEVER take anything for granted so tear it back apart.
You will get it right but I still have to laugh. sorry

I wasn't laughing!!!But kept mycool also... ;)! Went and took a nap on the couch for about 3 hours.Got up and decided it had to be opened up again..so I went for it and just came in the house.Well the mag bearing was put in wrong,so good thing I opened her up again.Got all the sealant cleaned off everything and will wash the cases again tomorrow and go at her again.
Only thing bugging me are them retainer c-clips.According to Yamaha manual when the bearing is locked down into position, the c-ring should be placed from a 11 to a 5 o'clock position. This way it is in the groove of both cases.Funny when I took the cases apart originally, didn't notice the c-rings in that position, but just in the upper case.....what do I know eh!!!

thats the joy of doing it ur self but once ur done u will be an expert at it not like some of benders back yard mechnics that put my vmax4engine back togeather they never lined up the dowel pins in the crank case halfs aand bolted it togeather like that how it ever turned over is deyond me but they got it started and it run like that for 5 years burnt down the jug on the clutch side as the crank seal was sucking air, got it fixed now any how. AL

can somebody who has had they motor apart chime in on these retainer rings and how they placed them back..would like to try again Friday to get motor back together again.Thanks.

I feel yer pain buddy, I just got the crank back for my 700sx from having it trued and a new outside pto bearing put on. I put the cases together and then read about the mag bearing holes being lined up with the oil journal. Well I went back out the next day and tried to see if I could see one of the holes through the journal, but couldn't so I pulled it back apart got the cases cleaned again and now ready to put back together again. It's my first rebuild as well. Duh!!! Take your time, this ain't race. I feel better having taken it apart and starting over. I'm sure there will be other things... like I seem to have misplaced the rubber gasket for the water pump cover... I've looked all over. I know I saw it before I started putting things back together, where the hell is it?? Grr!!

I recently rebuilt a 2000 SRX with 441 miles on it, the rings were postioned just like their shown in the manual and I put it back together that way. The one thing I can think of is maybe over time those rings will turn in the case, I think you position them like that as a way of making sure everything is lined up properly.
Just my .02.

I was thinking the same, those rings may turn after a while.May have gotten away with it I guess..but having the mag side bearing installed in reverse sure wouldn't have been a pretty site after about 1/2 hour of riding. Can you just feel them bearings flying around and putting a hole on my cases..yikes!!!!! Thanks guys for re-assuring me.
