viper chain - time for new one?

It should run a long time if serviced and tensioned correctly.I've heard of them with 10,20, even 30,000 miles!I think somebody just mentioned recently that the shop manual does give a wear spec, but I've never seen it or looked for it in the manual, I just inspect it for wear and any obvious problems when its out.

I got 13,000 miles out of the chain on my 2000 SRX before I had to replace it. I changed the chaincase oil every season, sometimes twice a seasn depending on the season's mileage. The chain failed suddendly on one trip. The first trip last season, the tensioner ran out of travel. I disassembled the chaincase and found a few links broke. I compared the length comparde to the spec. in manual, strecthed a large amount. The sprockets looked very good but i replaced the chain and sprockets. I had been using the "special" chaincase fluid, Amsoil chaincase fluid. I am going back to a synthetic 75-80W gear oil with a moly disulfide lubricant additive.

Make sure to take care of your chaincase... I got stuck in a foot of water for a bit, and everything ran fine right after, but the next morning my sled wouldn't move anywhere. Ice in the chaincase.
