Just rescued a 97 XTC 600 and started reading on here about the ring problems.

Question is which piston kit seems to be better as a replacement, stock(using 98 parts) or Wiseco?

The head appears untouched.Sled has over 3000 miles on it.I believe I'm the third owner so I don't know all the history.
I have not yet contacted a dealer to have them check with yamaha to see if this sled has had anything done to it on record.

I would like to prempt any future problems with the motor.
This is going to be a back yard sled with an occasional longer trip on the trails.I'd like it to be reliable and not have to worry.
Anything else I should look for?

I have heard about these 600 twins having a weak alloy piston from the factory that made them a weak point on these motors. I personally have seen no proof of that, but then again I only know one guy who has one, and he only uses it as a spare sled. However I did decide to put wiseco pistons in my 600 triple and they have been very good thus far, about 2000 miles on them. I bought the forged set, and wiseco is about the only aftermarket piston I would buy, they have a pretty damn good quality.

I went through my 600 twin last year planning to use wiseco as we share the same opinion of their quality...... I was strongly encouraged to use OEM!!!

I rode 635 miles last year, just did a compression test and am very pleased with the OEM pistons and how well the rings seated without having the cylinders refinished!!!!

I'm sticking with the YAMABRAINS!!!!!! OEM!!!!

Lets post something for wiseco too. I`ve used those in my twins everytime and worked ok, you must remember to warm up engine properly when using forged pistons like wiseco because piston clearance is bigger before engine is warm.

Stock piston failure was caused by weak piston ring pin, it snap away and ring was able to turn and when reaching exhaust port engine seized. Problem was sloved by Yamaha.

At twin engines wiseco piston is way more lighter than stock and by using those engine is little bit sharper and takes rpms quicker. So for twin engine wiseco is good choise too and for srx only oem pistons is way to go. SRX pistons are so much different (BETTER) quality than twin oems.

Those pistons had the piston ring retainer pin work their way loose and tear up the cylinder. The pistons were updated a year later.

Only if I was short on cash and wanted to go riding would put wisecos in... just let it warm up longer
